Title: Moved Up in the World: Altitude Question
Post by: twinlove04 on July 06, 2006, 05:51:18 PM
I just U-Hauled my belongings (GS included) from Kentucky to Albuquerque, NM. 8)  I am now ~5,000 ft. above where I used to live.
So, before I start the bike should I turn out the mixture screws a couple of times?   Will the idle screw need to be touched? (Prior posts on altitude seem to be about driving up/down).  Or should I just try to start and then go from there?  Any help on this would be great!  Thanks.

I'd say start it, and go from there.

Get ready for some lost horsies.  My GS was pretty gutless here at 4700 ft.  My favorite roads start at that base and go over 8000 ft, so this subject really mattered to me.  I rejetted, and dyno tuned, but it still never really had all the snap it should have been capable of.  You just can't win against air that thin.  When I took my TL down to Sacramento, I kept lofting the front wheel on accident, the 4500 foot drop was a drastic change.

If I were you, I'd try it out, and plan on high flow filters and a re-jet.

Call up the local Suzuki dealer and ask them.  I'm always up for free advice :thumb:

I've already re-jetted/filtered and sport a V+H pipe, so I'll be interested to see how the elevation change feels.  Everyone and their grandma has a motorcycle out here...it's great.  Haven't seen any GS's, though.

Okay.  I'm having a slight issue with the mixture here at 5000 ft.  I turned in the mixture screws about 1/2 turn and then started her just fine and the idle was great for my GS's maiden high altitude excursion.  Then after 50 miles @80mph with no problems I pulled off and noticed a carbon build-up on the exhaust tip.

I turned in the screws another 1/4 and the idle got louder but it didn't change RPMs.  Now she purrs just fine and starts from a stop better than before, but she bogs during 6K+ RPMs acceleration. :dunno_white:

Shoud I turn out the screws just a tad or what?  Thanks!

Check your plugs.

You were running rich if you were building up carbon. Run it to 6k when it starts bogging and just shut it down, pull the plugs and check.
If they are wet you are still rich, if they are dry then you are lean. Adjust accordingly... someone else will have to tell you which way is rich/lean on the air screw on a GS, as I havent jetted mine yet.
