Title: Annoying new guy Tach question
Post by: LPC2104 on July 07, 2006, 10:30:15 AM
Tach broke on my recent trip.

I searched and found some answers but something isn't making sense to me.  My tach cable is firmly secured in both the engine and tach case.  I didn't check the cable because when I push harder on the cable towards the engine, the needle registers correctly.  It seems to me that if it was a shoddy cable, I wouldn't get the reading.  Does that sound right?  Would I still get action on the needle if the cable was shredded?  If it's not the cable itself and is the connection, how would I fix that?  Like I said previously, the things that spin on are really tight.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Unscrew the cable from the engine end and take a look at it.  IIRC the cable should be square on the end where it couples to the engine.  My guess is that it came loose at some point and rounded off, so it doesn't work unless you push it in further.

If this is the problem, the solution is a new tach cable

It sounds like the connection is OK.  When you unscrew the cable to check the squareness of the ends, be sure to pull on one of the ends too.  More than one GStwinner has pulled half of their cable out of the outer housing that way.  (It was broken inside.)
