Title: Paint Question (Now painted...Let me know what you think!)
Post by: seaheifer on July 07, 2006, 12:19:34 PM
I am making something for my bike (04F) and need to paint it....I was going to paint it white since matching the paint would be easiest but have also heard that it would look good blue...I know the color clue and a website that sells it....www.colorrite.com.....however kinda at a heafty price....anyone know anyplace else I could get the color...Candy Grand Blue at a much cheaper price......Will post a pic in a second to get your opinions on wheather I should paint it white or bule.....

Go with white. Also, clean up the weld on that exhaust! Yuck!

Yeah the exhaust it next...the previous owner was messing with it so I am eaither just going to replace it or just redo the welds and sand and polish.....

So alpha's vote, white with blue writing...

Here's another company you can get your paint from

http://www.cyclecolor.com/

You should paint the whole rear cowling and the part you made blue.  Think Alpha did that to his bike looked real nice.
( Alpha actually exchanged rear cowling's with another person. )

Wow, Im looking to do a single seat/cowl thing on my bike and you totally gave me an idea! I was just going to completely build something from scratch out of carbor fiber or fiber glass, but maybe I could use my old plastics and build on them....HUMMMMMMMMM.

As for the weld job on the pipe....yup..."blotchy" comes to mind.
Did you weld it under water?

Just kidding.
Thanks for the idea.

I am not a welder so it is just finding time to go to my friends to get him to redo it.....I dont know who welded it but it looks horrible b/c of the shield (ant that is being nice) So I am just going to get my friend to put a lot of extra beads on it and then I will grind and polish is and it should look like new.....as for the rear....I mocked up a rough frame with bendable wire and masking tape then covered it in a metal screen mesh and then fiberglassed it.  Once it dried...took out the metal bars (only being taped made it very easy) and then a nice thick layer of bondo to smooth it out and make it even and uniform.....just got done sanding the spot puddy (the red) and should be putting on some primer within a day or too... Will post picks with primer

So to answer your question nick...nope, made it myself....rather proud of myself to seeing how it is my first time with fiberglass! :icon_razz:

Have you considered doing a carbon fiber look to the tail? I know it sounds crazy, but I was considering doing that to what even cowl I made....you know, the carbon fiber looking sticker thing? Ive seen it used on other body parts, why not the rear cowl? But then again, Im putting it on a black bike, not a blue/white combo like yours.

As for mock up, I was thinking about using a big peice of styrofoam...forming and shaping it to something I like....then wrapping it with fiber glass or carbon fiber...letting it dry....then building it up from uder to make it stronger....

I know I could wrap it with one fiber glass sheet, paint it with por-15 (gloss black), let it dry and I know it would almost be as strong as the original plastics....that alone almost looks like carbon fiber....double the sheets and it would be hella strong.

As for what youve done, Ive never considered using my original plastics.....and just building off of them using my original seat....
I was just gonna make a rear tail peice with one of those rock hard no padding race seats you know?

Anyway, looks good. I'll consider your way of mocking your ups when I have a go at it....

Getting a big foam block isnt a bad idea...I took out that rear handle bar so I could slope it down a little more gradual..if you just cut out the inside to fit over the seat then you can shape the outside to how you want...I am going to rivit two straps that will run under the cowling and those straps will go under the seat....one on each side of the seat clamp....so keep it attached to the bike.

About that exhaust, I am going to guess that someone was trying to mess with the baffling. You might want to check out your state's law's on that, some state's have pretty strict fine's on tampering with exhaust pipe's. Even though you didnt do it, it is now your bike, you are now liable for its condition. Better to be safe than sorry. And I love the mod, I think white would look good, I wished someone would make an aftermarket seat just like that!!!!!

I never thought about that....but I agree on the baffle part....I think the original owner took some baffles out to make it sound louder.....because it does.  I am going to look up more to find out if I will get into any type of trouble (but I doubt it b/c I am in georgia and I belive we only have emissions if you are metro atlanta)

As for the seat...maybe I can make a mold off of it and then make individual mold that I can sell cheap to others (to pretty much cover cost and shipping)....I think I will look into it  :)

I had emissions when I was living in Kennesaw, which is 30 miles north of Atlanta... so you might wanna check into that.. it's actually something I'm curious about, as I'm bringing my bike from florida back to school in Atlanta in August.. if you find out for sure, let me know, will ya?

Just put a last thin  layer of bondo on top to make it even...will sand tomorrow and then bondo the under side (it is still wire and fiberglass) to give it a nicer look and then it that dries in time, rig up two straps to strap it under the seat.....then off to prime and paint...I will take one more pic before I prime>.
