I reckon  that Spring & Autumn are the best time of the year to ride. Winter's too cold, wet & frosty & Summer's are just too bloody hot.

I took mine for a spin on the weekend, the roads were dry and I didnt see any idiots on the road either

Girly men! the lot of ya!  :kiss3:

I do have to agree with you. I've only got my bike license, so riding into the eastern suburbs everyday from the Sutho shire is a major pain, it was 4C the other day when I left home, it's usually about 6C every other day and the week before that it was raining for the most part. It takes about 5min before I can feel my fingers again when I get to work

Yep I'll admit that. I've been driving to work lately cause I'm not keen on riding in -8

C'mon, whats wrong with -8 :dunno_white: I mean, try that over here in Canberra with fog and ice, and throw in the other "drivers" we share the roads with. Now we're talking some commitment ;)

Winter is fine with me. The only annoyance is caused by my visor fogging up. Also annoying is the fact that my car won't start because it has been sitting there untouched for so long as i spend all my time getting around on the gs. Oh, and there are also more cars on the road because i think people are afraid to get to work by walking or pushbike.

not a big fan of the cold or wet even though I have all the good gear which I admit keeps me warm in the cold and dry it just with all that on I double my size and width and look like a colourful michelin man and it makes it a bit harder to move around in all the gear, damn weather :thumb:

I have been riding every day I could  :), that was until monday.
I Low sided it and slid into (almost under) a barrier in the hills. :2guns:
Only 2K on the clock and $3K worth of damages  (thank u full comp!)
Thats what you get for trying to be Rossi with noob skills!  :nono:
Still the bright side is I was wearing full gear so I came out ok tho, small graze, bruised knee and ego :thumb:

Still can't belive it... what a dumb ass...  :icon_rolleyes:

Mate as long as you are OK thats what counts don't be hard on yourself I had more experanced riders crash infront of me and behind me sometimes its the luck of the draw the imporant thing is to try and realise how and why you crashed and learn from that my first bike a DT175 was generally crashed every second week (mainly in the dirt) but I'd think about it after it happened and work on that and so far "touch wood" two bike since then no crashes and better to get crashes out of the way before you can ride like rossi things will happen faster and be more painful at his speeds :thumb:

Get over the cold first. A helmet and a runny nose isn't a good mix.

A runny nose doesn't worry me, it's having a coughing fit half way through a bend or sneezing in my helmet I don't like.

Peter Stevens in Adelaide is remodeling the store & have moved the accessories section across the street.
While the renovations are happening, thay have a 15%  "off all items instore" sale on. I garbed a pair of Dainese Tracker winter gloves & a mate scored a Dririder Nordic 4 jacket which was already heavily discounted for around $240. If i hadn't needed the gloves, i would have bought a jacket to.

Yeah... saw that. Went there Sat. after PS. Limited sizes though. There where some Nordic 3, Nordic 4, Rallycross & a couple of others. Did the sign say $199 or From $199? Can't remember now. They also had some Shoei helmets marked down a fair bit.
One of the salesmen is the son of a friend of mine. If your ever looking to buy a new Honda, ask for Tom.

I've done alot of silly long distance winter trips in temps as low as -5 and my best advice is layers!!!

Thermal top, two tshirts, (long sleeved sweat shirt, high necked fleece jumper, (a wind cheater on top is optional and desirably if its going to be frosty, wet or foggy) then of course your motorbike jacket (close vents, zip in inner warm liner if jacket has one)

thermal leggings (or skins), board shorts then jeans or preferably dragon jeans.

Two pairs of footy socks, water proof boots

Thermal glove liners and winter gloves (having warm hands makes such a massive difference.)

Baloclava for your head and anti-fog the inside of your visor (spit or a thin film of detergent are cheaper alternatives)

Yeah you'll feel like a michelin man but if your doing any more than a couple of hours of riding it becomes real important as the temps + wind chill factor approaches 0 and below.

I just fitted a pair of Oxford Hot Grips.  For more details see this thread (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=43352.0).

They were $129 from Sydney City (although most places seem to have them for around the same).  At that price they're cheaper than most winter gloves and now I find myself just riding around in my summer ones.  I'm a big fan.  :thumb:

Geez I wish I had your heated grips on Sunday.

I rode from Sydney to Wagga Wagga which incuded a stint in the snow from Marulan to Yass. I counted 7 cars that ran off the road.

My hands froze!!!! My fingers were in absolute burning pain. My throttle hand was feeling it the worst. Then suddenly the pain went away in the hand.

Hmmm, the temp hadn't got any warmer so what was happening. I then realised I couldn't take my hand of the throttle. AI bent forward to discover a layer of ice had formed over my glove basically freezing my finders into position.  :icon_confused:

I battled on and made good use of the Yass servos hand dryer. It seriously took 5 minutes to get feeling back in my fingers. I'm certain I was on the verge of suffering frost bite.

If your going to ride through such cold, wet, snowy conditions I recommend some sort of water proof glove. Once your gloves get saturated in such cold conditions they turn into freezers for your hands.

I use the xtra large Cotton Lined (these slide on easier) Dishwashing Gloves over my Winter bike gloves in the mornings, (and in the rain) by the the arvo the temps up so dont need them any more!
They are a bit grippy and feel a little strange at first but you get used to them fairly quickly, you just look like a dill with your Fluro pink or Green hands sticking out :icon_mrgreen:
Only issue is they tear easily im on my third pair this winter.

I'm more than happy with the heated grips, to only thing is that at -5 some hand guards would help.

Yep

Layers, Layers, Layers and more Layers.

I ride in all sorts of stupid weather as I decided to buy a new 08GS instead of a second hand car.  I hate cars anyway so a little cold wet weather comes with the deal.

Good wet weather jacket, pants, boots, gloves etc

AND

Layers, Layers, Layers

Oh and 1 more thing I find that works a treat to keep the cold out of your helmet is a nice wooly scarf stuffed down the front of your jacket and the end of the scarf stuffed up the front of your helmet.  This keeps the cold air blast out of your nose and eyes on those cold days.

Alright some more tips I have found this winter...

Rain-X Anti Fog works really well on the inside of your visor. Just apply a thin film with a tissue or soft cloth before riding.

Polypropelyne Thermals are the best for biking. They wick moisture away from the skin if you sweat, so later when it gets cold you don't freeze. Polypropelyne also has one of the best thermal conductivity ratings ie. Prevents your body heat from escaping.

Stopping and eating also warms you up by kick starting your digestion system, which helps power your bodies internal fire.

Also, if you know you have a long distance ride in the extreme cold, an air activated Thermal Hand warmer works well. Just open them a few hours before you need them, and slide them into your gloves.  :thumb: They last about 6 hours

I wear my skins in the warmer weather as well.

You can't beat heated grips for keeping your hands warm.

A neck warmer is essential, also a silk balaclava is handy.

Your dog is so cute I can't stand it.

I can't help but wonder what it would be like to have snow in July and warmth for Christmas.  How does Santa land in Australia with no snow?  :icon_lol:

Santa uses 6 snow white boomers (kangaroos) to pull his sleigh, or borrows a rusty holden ute. He also wears a singlet, shorts and thongs.

it's good having a hot christmas, perfect drinking weather, then again winter can be perfect drinking weather too.

I bought some wet weather over pants from Bunnings for $15. They work well but only come in Yellow. For about $20 you can get different coloured ones from Rays Outdoors.

I have  a Joe Rocket Men's Ballistic 7.0 Waterproof Jacket ($279 from http://www.bikegearwarehouse.com.au )

Very good Jacket, probably too warm to wear in summer but cozzy in the cooler months. I wear Polypropylene Thermal shirt and pants + a fleece jumper in winter and  it keeps my warm on the Sydney - Newcastle ride.

I have a light weight waterproof spray jacket that I b ought oversizes to put over my Joe Rocket jacket if its going to be really wet or cold.

I have also bought some DriRider Storm gloves but I haven't had a chance to test them in the cold yet. My hands are always the first to feel the cold.

To keep your hands warm, a pair of heated grips. I'm going to fit a set of storm Barkbusters, to keep the wind off and to stop the levers icing up.

As Im new to being on a bike, I havent experinced winter on two wheels yet, but Autumn is AWESOME!!!. Finished work at 6 am at Katoomba today (after a 12hr shift!) and riding home was brilliant. Didnt come across another car until Hazo/Woodford area. Loving the warm pockets of air, the corners and the lack of trucks this morning! Got home and slept like a baby (well that was until 1230, when i had to wake up again and go back to work!)

Ok. If'n you haven't already.... git yourself a jacket with rain liner & winter liner. For winter insert them both. Underneath also wear a shirt and slopey joe - singlet too. Maybe even two slopey joes will be needed. It's not that cold air will penetrate the rain lining. But the cold will radiate through. The extra layers you have on keep the cold layer away from your skin.

If you don't wear full length riding boots, now is the time to tuck your pants into your socks to help keep cold air off your ankle skin.

If it's extra cold, wear some trackie dacks under your pants.

Get yourself a balaclava and you'll be glad. Amazing how much air flows up under your chin. For extra warmth, fold a bandanna into a triangle and wear that over the balaclava - or start with that and progress to balaclava. Be sure to tuck downward facing point into top of jacket to help keep cold air off neck.

Get yourself some good winter gloves. Your hands will still freeze, it'll just take a few minutes longer Bwahahahahahaaaa.

Make sure you have some cement powder in with your breakfast cereal so you can harden up.

Guys at work think I'm nuts for riding to work in winter. Wife wants me to take the car. But I keep on riding.

Neck warmer Might cut it. But I doubt it. The cold air will Still get up under the helmet and freeze your face. Only a balaclava can help there. But... try with the neck warmer and see how long you can go.

This is one I'd like to do next time I'm in Sydney - and surrounds.

Location C is where that guy built a castle-like tower on his farm. He will give a tour if he knows you're coming in advance and you phone him. I've got his number. Otherwise, you can see the castle from the road - Powels Rd just west of Bilpin.

Michael

Looks good Michael, I have looked at your map and have decided to do my own version of it (slightly abbreviated) later in the next two weeks (I'm waiting for school holidays to finish first, less dickheads on the roads)

Nice looking ride there, been meaning to do Bells Line ever since I got the bike. I live in Penrith too, so just on my doorstep. Might be a bit cold this time of year though.

Rode to work yesterday, -2 in the morning when I left for work at 6am. Never been so cold in my life, my hands were all red and numb by the time I got to work and I wear thick winter gloves! All part of the adventure that is motorcycling though I suppose :thumb: The other guy who arrives at the same time as me said I was a nut case for riding :icon_lol:

It was -6 here yesterday, along with the fog meant that I had a layer of ice on me. Heated grips help, but when it starts getting down that cold a pair of hand guards would be more of a help as they keep the cold wind off your hands. A pair of silk gloves to wear inside your gloves could help.

I'm loving my electrically heated gear.....long night ride last night up to the Central Coast and back, toasty warm the whole way!

I've got Bark busters on order for the bike and haven't decided if I want heated grips yet. How much of a difference do they make over getting hand guards to deflect the wind?

Enjoying winter riding so far...dont mind the cold but you can keep the rain. Was sleeting for a fair while up at Katoomba, wind was blowing a gale so sleet didnt settle, but when i hit Hazelbrook, rain and sleeting had stopped and dry road again, was a good ride home. Will invest in good winter gloves that arent too chunky

I love riding in the rain, it's a great test. Another bonus is that the bronze aren't out with their radars on wet days.

I live in Penrith and work in Parramatta. I left home late as usual a few days back and the weather was fine, albeit cold and dark, by the time I reached the Caltex servo on the M4 it was sprinkling a little, so I thought nothing of it and didn't bother putting my wets over my leathers. Biggest mistake! By the time I reached Prospect Hwy my leathers were already totally soaked through, I was gonna stop and put my wets on, but it cleared up. Only for it to start pouring again after Cumberland Hwy

Needless to say I was in a pretty shitty mood by the time I got to work.

a marked car has been siting at the servo at Hazelbrook in the shadows, see him when i knock off at 10pm coming back from Katoomba
