ok heres the deal,
2004, 14,500 on the clock. never been done ever.
they all were tite, about .002-.001 clearance.
so heres what i did.
CLY 1 (siting on bike, the left cly)
intake-
stock shim - 2.65
new shim- 2.59 (messured, 2.60 on shim)
new clearance- .004
old clearance- .002
exhust-
stock shim- 2.75
new shim- 2.65
new clearance- .005
was- less than .003
CLY 2 (right one)
intake-
stock shim- 2.68
new shim- 2.59
new clearance - .004
was- less than .002
exhust-
stock shim- 2.75
new shim- 2.65
new clearance- .004
was less than .002
Have you ever done this before? How long did it take you?
form taking the fairings off to reinstalling them about an hour, this was my first time do it.
and i have to say, the bike runs a hell of a lot better, much less vibrations, and power seems smoother.
Did you have all the right tools Kerry talked about on the video?
yes all but the magnet that i spent 20 mins looking for and never found. the east coast kit has every thing you need. that is if your on the east coast
Ah... You were on the list to receive the kit. That's why you had everything
See, I don't wanna put myself on that list, even though I probably need to. I don't know WHEN i'll be able to perform the operation, and I don't wanna keep other people waiting.
dude, take your time and do it. its realy easy. i had the lap top out there to find out the clearances and i found that kerry as installing the valve tool wrong or not far enough over that why it keep poping.
dude, trust me. kerrys walk though makes it childs play.
had i done it, every one would be ready to go to church to clinse there minds of the sins i said.
Can you direct me to this Kerry Video for valve adjusting I keep reading about?

they all were tite, about .002-.001 clearance.
Are your clearance figures in inches or mm?
If you mean inches, all were to spec w/o shim change. If you mean mm you must have decimal point in wrong place?
Spec is .03-.08 mm (.0012-.0031 in)
On a related note, how do valve clearances get tighter? Assuming they were adjusted within spec at the factory, I'd expect that running the engine would wear down the metal a bit and make the clearances looser if anything. That's my justification for doing valves by the "ear" method--wait until I can hear the valves ticking and then check 'em. Someone feel free to explain to me if/why this is wrong.

Hope this helps.
So is the shim removal tool from the video still available from Dennis Kirk? I looked for it on their website and could not find it.
Very helpful video, by the way.

That's a very good question. I was assuming he meant metric too but then he mentioned going from a 2.75 shim to a 2.65 shim and recorded a .002 change in measurement. You might have just adjusted all your valves right out of spec Rangerbrown.

There was a "less than" before the clearance. And I believe that he put one too many zeros after the decimal point.
Tight but non zero ... WTF ... I set them all there ... thhey tend to go loose in my case, if I can measure it, its fine, if I cant measure it well I might decide its fine anyway ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Here I come to the rescue. This is the tool for the valve job. http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/valve_shim_tools/
part number Suzuki 08-0017
I just bought one of those Motion Pro valve tools and tried it for the first time yesterday. Didn't work at all for me, I got out the screwdrivers and did it the old fashion way as I had done many times before. Waste of $20. Don't need one of those magnets either, tweezers work just fine for changing shims.
ooo, shaZam!
i read the feeler gauge wrong, damn it.
i just went over 300 miles sence then. well
lets see then,
they are now..
.076 to .152
shaZam! shaZam! shaZam! shaZam!. well at least i didnt send the kit off yet
At least they won't be getting too tight any time soon.
we that gives me the idea of why i am hearing taping when idling back down coming to a stop.
damn it i know better than this. i got in a rush to do it fast and this is what happens.
i am such a retard, could have been worse. i could have made them tite.
well the bright side i know which ones came from were so all i have to do is swap them back out and re due the measurements.
i wish you all could have seen my face when i read that first post that said i did something wrong\
it was a cold, blank motion less stare.
