Solo,
Check w/ a local model railroad and/or hobby shop. Often they carry small sheets (6"x8") of plastic of varying thicknesses that can be cut, shaped, and painted for a variety of uses. "Plastruct" and "Evergreen" are two specific brand names.

There are two basic kinds to look at: Acrylic (plexiglass) and Polycarbonate (Lexan).  Acrylic is cheaper and more scratch-resistant but is also more brittle and harder to cut/shape cleanly.  Polycarbonate is much stronger but it costs more and it's harder to find in different colors.  Your local plastic shop or home store should have both in different thicknesses available.
