Title: stalled out, scary
Post by: vinny8524 on July 17, 2006, 04:46:51 AM
Bike has been running great,  matter of fact just picked it up from the dealership saturday and rode home fine (about 30 mins).  They installed new tire, inspection and synched/adjusted the carbs.
This morning riding into work,  coming up a hill all the sudden she starts to lean pop a few times and acts like its only running on one cyl and struggling,  I barely make it up the hill to a street were i can turn off on to and as soon as i let of the throttle she stalls.   Wont restart.  I check and yeah theres plenty of gas in the tank,  i put it to prme and wait a minute and bam she starts right up and runs perfectly all the rest of the way to work on prime (only a nother 5 mins to work though)

so it seems like the bowls ran low or out of fuel all together with the petcock on the normal setting,  I have had the bike for months now and it never has done that, even on longer trips.   what might have caused this  (looks like the vacuum line is still hooked up and in good condition)  it was kinda of scary hoping i mad it up the hill,  cause there was no where to pull over safley.  Damn, just when you think its perfect,  no more fiddling just gonna ride it all summer,  more shaZam! breaks on these bikes!!!

Uhh... looking in the tank is NOT a reliable way to tell if there's enough gas in the tank. I'd bet money that you were just low on fuel. Switching to PRI will draw gas through the reserve line, instead of the main line. Go to a gas station. Stand her straight up. Fill her up. I bet you get at LEAST 4.1 gallons in her. If it's an '01+ that is. I don't know the size of the smaller, older tanks.

Oh yeah, as an aside to the above.. Make sure you know where your petcock is, and that you can reach back and change positions while riding. Much easier to do that, then to pull over and change it and get back on the highway.

Also sounds similar to fuel starvation. How fast were you going?

i was doing about 55-60 about 5200-5500rpms and she got to surging first, then lean popping and then really struggling up the hill.  I think it was low fuel though.   The tank was about the lowest i have ever let it go since i got the bike and i had about 135 miles on the odo.  once i refilled the bowls on prime, it ran okay.  I filled it up at work and it took about 3 gallons or so, so it was prolly just my first expirence of running it down to the reserve pick up tube and not realizing i should have switxhed the petcock around immediately.  It ran fine all the way home later today (even took the longer route to test it out) and it was fine.  I had to swing by the suzuki shop on the trip home (they forgot to give me my registration back) and they thought the same thing,  just low on fuel.  If not i will be running it on prime for a while and just turing it to on at night so it doesnt flood.  Im tired on fixing it,  I just wanna ride and have no issues for a while,  hahaha!!

my money's on the tank hitting reserve. it WILL look like theres plenty of gas. use your tripmeter to gauge when you should fill up...
