Title: Rode my friend's '78 CB750 home... 80 miles.
Post by: RVertigo on July 17, 2006, 12:46:08 PM
 :o :cookoo:

I dunno what the hell I was thinking when I volunteered to ride a '78 H#nda CB750 I'd NEVER seen before for 80+ miles on the freeway.  Sweeeeeet bike.  But, heavy as hell, tall as hell (I could only get toes down), and lots of carb problems.

I had one hand on the throttle and the other on the choke, 'cause I had to adjust the choke depending on my RPMs to keep it from flooding, loading up, and backfiring (through the carbs (with no air box) AND out the pipes).   The #1 carb was pissing out gas and it was actually spraying down the bike...  Yeah, it needs some work.

The throttle was pretty hard to keep open.  Strong arm required!

The chain was two links too long and couldn't be tightened.  It was floppy as hell and hitting the center-stand.

The rear tire was square, the front tire was wavy, and they were both cracked.

The handlebars were bent, the clutch lever was bent down

The normal headlight was burned out, so I was running brights.  The tail light was out as well, but the turn signals and brake lights worked.

It had bent highway pegs that were really low...  Every time I tried to put my feet down I stepped on them...  I took them off at my first pit stop.

I hit reserve on the freeway after about 70 miles and thought the bike just gave up.   After about 20 seconds, I turned the petcock to res and it started running again.

All that to deal with AND I was coming back in weekend rush traffic...  Traffic flow would go from 80 to 5, back to 80, then back to 5 MPH...  SHEESH!

Needless to say, I had a friggen BLAST! :cookoo:

You NAILED it. :thumb: :icon_mrgreen:

It's pretty funny...  I drew a little picture of what I thought he should do with the fender, seat, and tank...  Looks like a Thruxton.

.....a Velocette? I haven't seen a Thruxton in ages. The first time I saw one was back in the '60s. The dude had black leathers, a puddin' bowl helmet, 4 pane leather goggles, clip ons, rearsets,  jeesh, he looked like he just got lost on his way to the Isle of Man . That obviously left an impression on my young mind, 'cause I've liked that sort of cafe racer, sport bike, race bike thing ever since.
