Title: gs500 y2k petcock question
Post by: trend on July 17, 2006, 06:34:37 PM
Ok, I was riding my bike for the 10th time today.. And mine cut out a couple times.. (It never has done this before on it's own).. I was going down a hill fairly slow..

So I think it is gas issue (even though I can hear/see gas in there which from what I read is unreliable).

Anyways, on the petcock, I see 3 positions... "ON" (which is what the arrow was point), then "PRI" and "RES".

What is the difference between "ON" and "PRI" ? And how much gas will I get from "RES"? Enough  for 10miles?

thanks

Res should be good for roughly 50 miles. It's approximately 1 gallon. RES is vacuum fed, and draws from the lowest point in the tank. PRI is gravity fed, and draws from the same point as RES. You use PRI if you run out of gas, or if you have fuel starvation, or if you've taken the carbs off, and they need to be refilled, or if for any other reason you need to refill the float bowls with gas. It's there because it doesn't require the bike to be running to allow gas to flow, like RES and ON do.
