I have started commuting to school (1 hour each way) and my back has started hurting. I'm pretty sure its from crouching over the motorcycle. Did that happen to anyone else when they started or does anyone have problems with it now? My lower back hasn't always been in the best of shape. I'm only 21 so I shouldn't be getting a bad back from a motorcycle already. Anyones have any ideas on what to do? Get a Harley isn't an idea, btw. Thanks
The sore back does happen after a long ride, but it is a lot worse for a new rider and does get better with experience. Part of it is stress (whether you think you are stressed or not, I bet you you're tensing your shoulders and back as your ride) and part of it posture. What you should do is try to pinch the tank with your legs and take the weight off your hands and arms, then as you ride try to focus on relaxing your shoulders and your back.
As you get more comfortable on the bike it will get better, but until then it may help to take an Alieve before you head out so the discomfort doesn't distract you from the road.
U sure the sore back is not from sitting in class all day?
I do stretching and strengthening exercises for the lower back and it really helps, usually takes a few weeks to kick in though....
Are you riding with a backpack? If so, try a tankbag. My back thanks me everyday for getting rid of the backpack and getting a tankbag. Seriously, it made a huge difference.
Yeah I was acutually thnking along the tankbag lines cause I know that would help. I'll try to do some stretching as well. Thanks for the responses. At least I know it's not just me. :icon_mrgreen:
relax your shoulders, drop your elbows, and if you notice any deathgrip, relax that too. As was mentioned, grip the tank with your knees, and use your abs to hold you up.
These muscles adjust and strengthen. Springtime is the worst for me, cuz I sit on my ass all winter.
After every ride get a massage from your significant other. :thumb: Seriously tho do what everybody is suggesting squeeze the tank with your legs and try and use your stomach muscles to keep you up. My back used to hurt after long rides too.
Tell the GF to take it easy next time.
