Title: 10 mm mirror mounts?
Post by: HoweMan on July 22, 2006, 07:13:29 AM
What's up gs'rs?  Question for y'all....I just got some mirrors from jc whitney that supposed to be compatible w/ 10 mm mounts which I thought the gs was....but they don't fit.  You think it has something to do w/ the thread spacing or something like that?  Just wondering why they don't fit....

thanks for any and all responses ~

It could be one of two things, the diameter of the thread is the wrong size to fit the hole OR the thread pitch is wrong. The pitch being the distance between the thread peaks. Either way it aint gonna fit.

As Hmmnnz correctly says it could also be a cack-handed thread. Even if it is it still wont fit. To do a rough test/comparison you need the old one as a sample, hold the two threaded sections together so the threads interlock, if the threads fit together snugly its almost certain you have a match. Though I am sure someone will confirm for certain if its a reveresed thread.

Both are right-hand-threaded mirrors. Only Ducatis and Yamahas have left hand threaded right mirrors.

Some mirrors have a fixing arrangement whereby firstly they screw into the hole, then there is an additional locking collar above the stud that needs to be tightened when the mirror is in the correct position. I always thought the thread was standardised.

Most are, I thought. The aftermarket mirrors my father got for his FZ1 had the same threads as my GS, except the right hand mirror's left hand thread of course.
