Title: I just got my first pavement drop out of the way
Post by: LizardQueen on July 22, 2006, 01:51:15 PM
Already dropped it on the lawn about 2 years ago when trying to push it out of the shed, but since it was on grass and I wasn't sitting on it I didn't count that one.

I still don't really know what happened, I was nearly at a dead stop when it occurred. I was coming down the main road in my town and had flipped the visor up to push my bangs out of my eyes when the traffic in front of me stopped short.
Somehow in being caught messing with the visor and having to brake sharply I got it a little sideways at the stop and even though I mostly had both feet down and was trying to hold it up it crossed the "point of no return"  and I just couldn't save it. We went down -slowly- to the right and I landed on my butt with the bike on top of my right leg.

The bike is in pretty good shape - just a scuffed engine cover and a slightly bent brake lever. I think my leg broke it's fall, and I twisted my knee pretty good as it landed on me.

Then I was so embarrassed at being watched by traffic stopped in both directions I had trouble picking it up (was trying to "clean and jerk" it off the ground instead of using my legs and while I'm big and strong for a girl - 5'10" - I'm not *that* strong). Fortunately some guys came over and helped me right it and I got on and took off. I hope I thanked them, I was so rattled and embarrassed I just wanted to get the hell out of there.

I think I may have given it too much front brake and not enough rear because I remember the back end sort of "hopping" just before it got sideways. Plus I had brand new boots on and the feel of them is way different than my old hiking boots I had used before and I think I got my right foot tangled up on the peg a little.

Oh well, at least not much damage was done and maybe I've gotten my token drop out of the way  :icon_confused:.

Made me kind of glad I got one without plastics, too (it's a '93).

oops, oh well we have all done it, glad your mostly unhurt and that the wee gs will ride another day. shaZam! happens :icon_mrgreen:
i doubt you would have given it too much front brake, you'd have to be hauling and jam the front on and be leaning forward to get the back off the ground.
mabee if you were partially leaning in hit a bit of gravel or a patch of oil that could have done it.

I'll probably never know what I did (though I'd like to so I don't do it again   8) ) - could have been gravel or other road mung.  I was going at a reasonable speed and straight (at least at first  ).

I felt like SUCH a dumbazz.....

The GS dumps well, I'll give it that. Probably better than I do...

I've just been reading a bunch of "dropped my bike" threads that I dug up with search. I feel a lot better now - it's not just me, and there is a booming business opportunity in replacement levers and turn signals .

If the back wheel was hopping maybe you jammed on the back brake and locked the rear wheel or went down the gears to quick.

Also what the hell are bangs and what were they doing in your eyes?

Bangs the hair that covers the forehead and sometimes get in your eyes if you have long bangs. :thumb:

Glad you are ok  :thumb:

LizardQueen:

You're absolutely NOT alone....and I hold the title of DropQueen. ;) As you get more experience, you'll get to know that "point of no return" better. I got pretty good at keeping the Baby G shiny side up. I'm still working at keeping the SVS shiny side up (14 days and counting ).

It sounds as though you didn't let it rattle you, and that's a good thing. I hope your knee heals up quickly!  :thumb:

Congrats on getting it out of the way, and it sucks that you got hurt. At least it's only minor damage. I dropped mine about 20 mins after I unloaded it from my truck, the day I bought it! Glad I bought a used naked bike! (and installed case guards shortly thereafter!)
