hey my friend is devating bewten this two bikes, and he wanted to know why he should get a slower bike, besides learning how to corner better.
INSURANCE!!!! I just bought a 500f for that exact reason. I am 24 and had a Katana picked out. Insurance was going to be $1,400 a year. There was no way I could afford that. I ran across the gs and liked the bike. When I checked insurance it sealed the deal. Its only $426 a year.
that do it right their, considering he isnt on the rich side of town.
my insurance is $236 a year and i'm 17 :flipoff:

My guess is that you're talking about liability, which only covers damage to OTHER PEOPLES property, if YOU RUN INTO THEM.. Whereas Keith is talking about full coverage, including comprehensive, which will cover him for things like: dropping bike, fire damage, wind tipovers, vandalism, etc. So :flipoff: right back. Next time you drop your bike and have to pay for repairs out of pocket, think about Keith's insurance replacing his stuff free after he hits his deductible!
I'm 20, and my insurance is $193 for roughly midrange liability only.
I'm paying little under $500 but without collision.
ok, my gf's brother had a katana 600, a 2001, we raced, he slowly pulled away. I hated riding on his katan b/c the thing is 70 pounds heavier than the GS500f. The ride and feel was good, but it was NOT NEARLY as nimble in the turns.
I am 20 with 2 speeding tickets, have insurance through Progressive, i pay 47 a month on my 05 GS500f.
I was going to buy his katana, i called insurance and it was 86 a month, it is double pretty much anywhere you go.
TRUST ME when i say the gs is better...
my insurance on my GS is $1200 a year for full coverage. Liability for a bike would be crazy. But if i did that it would only be like $300 I think.
But considering a gsxr 600 is $6,940 a year for me, I'll take the gs500f any day
I have full coverage and i pay 102 a year and im 16... :flipoff:

I have a REAL hard time believing this statement...
ok so im on with my dads bike .. but still its only 102 a year
Based on your VERY FIRST post:
http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=26482.msg278164#msg278164
You've still got the "F" model, right? It should have added much more than that to his insurance policy. Unless daddy is giving you a break and only charging you SOME of the cost.
Full coverage: Liability, comprehensive, collision, AND medical.
no dude i sware to god its only 102 a year.. why is every one always up my ass?
It's not you this time. It's just the statement that a 16 yr old can get FULL coverage (see An's post for a definition of FULL insurance coverage) for $102 a year is ludicrous.
If Matty's on his parent's policy with a company such as State Farm, it's not beyond the realm. When you have multiple lines with State Farm, moto insurance is dirt cheap. Guess where we have multiple lines of insurance going?
It's also possible that a youngster isn't too familiar with the difference between full coverage and liability only. I don't recall whether Matty's bike is new and/or financed. Matty, if you're on your parent's policy, you might ask them what kind of coverage you have and report back. I'd be interested to know if it's State Farm and if it's full coverage. That would be an excellent advertisement for whatever company you're with. ;)
Nice Guy is correct. I have full coverage with $250 deductibles. I left off the underinsured motorist coverage because my medical insurance will cover all of that. My bike is a new 06 500f. If some punk pushes it over in a parking lot or I get in an accident $250 fixes it. If it gets stolen insurance pays it off. I am 24 with an accident on my record from a year ago. Thankfully I was in my truck when that happened. Also with my company if you are not listed on the bike you are riding then you are not covered. Matty, I would make sure that being on dad's bike was going to cover mine.
no its progressive .. and its full coverage .. my parents made sure.
When I worked in insurance many years ago, Progressive offered great rates to folks with excellent records, but not so great rates for folks that didn't have a perfect record. It sounds as if that's true today, and it also sounds as though you've got smart folks, Matty. :thumb:
THANK YOU PANDY. finally some respect.
Hey man if its that cheap I am glad for you. If I could get insurance like that I might have to consider moving up to a gixxer!

How many policies do your parents have through progressive? Cuz the multiple policy discount is the only discount I can think of that progressive gives. They don't give one for MSF, and they don't give one for good grades, and I don't THINK there's one for being a safe driver (not sure.. don't remember). I'm on progressive, on my own policy, and as a 20 year old single male, no accidents, no tickets, (i.e., perfectly clean record), I pay $193 a year for mid range liability. Minimum liability would have been like $180.. I figure for the extra $13 a year, I can use another $100K in coverage.
*edited for typo*
just my dads bike ... look if u guys dont belive me ... then dont belive me ... but im not gonna lie about something as stupid as how much i pay for insurance
Matty, for evidence I will provide myself.
Coverage for one GS500E, 20 year old male, single, no other vehicles covered under this policy, 110 a year. Progressive.
With my car they'd probably pay me to have the bike, LOL
My boss recently went to take one of the cars off of his policy (an early-nineties Jeep that they sold), and his agent said that his insurance will go up $400/year if he does that. I think he's going to "forget" to remove the vehicle from his policy.

I'm not saying you're lying. Just trying to figure out how to do it. Cuz that's CHEAP.
I mean.. damn.. I could use a discount like that on mine. Unfortunately, my dad doesn't have a bike.. and I couldn't be on his policy anyway.. damn..
yeah .... i lucked out. and ill be on the gs for awhile ... so its all good.
location has a LOT to do with rates...dont forget that. different parts of the country are going to be different rates for the same rider. Hell, different neighborhoods around here will net 100%+ differences in primiums.
deductibles also factor greatly into the primium they charge you.
keep an open mind.
Pablo - I forgot about the deductibles. The higher they are, the more you save... Until you actually use the policy because of a crash.
I'd believe him, since the bike is registered to his dad, then the policy is in place for a male rider at whatever age his dad is. Not him. Just like my car is registered and insured under my dad with me as a primary driver. If he's listed as a now-and-then rider of his dad's bike I could see it being that cheap.
Im 17 and pay 2500 for just liability..good ole' Southern Ontario. And I'd go with the GS over the Katana anyday.

I don't think you qualify in this insurance debate. EVERYTHING in Canada is more expensive. j/k
:thumb:
I started riding when I was 26 years old. Full coverage for me was about 200.00 living in Philadelphia with a brand new GS, the highest insurance area in the state. Now that I'm 43 I pay about 100 bucks for full coverage on the same bike (plus towing) through progressive. So I absolutely beleive he is only paying a little over a hundred in Erie. Insurance differs from state to state and regions with that state.
Chris
On the subject of insurance I am 35 and pay $170.00 year for high end liability with comp and collision deductibles of only $100.00

I am moving up to an 06 gixxer this fall, my insurance for a gixxer 600 will be almost 10 times what I pay for my GS. 1,680.00 per year my GS is 170.00 per year. dont think because the GS is super cheap the Gixxer will be reasonable.

That's BS. I'm 23, no wrecks, tickets, etc and still pay $696 per year for full coverage with a $500 deductable through State Farm.
Oh, I should also note that we have about 12-13 vehicles on our policy, there's no such thing as a group discount with State Farm in this state. State Farm is a complete ripoff to be honest, we need to either switch soon or learn how to swoon these high rates into our favor.
In just a few years I'll end up buying the bike twice!!! I might as well save my money, ride as smart as I can and stick with liability only and hope the odds play out in my favor... you know, 1 major wreck or theft every 6-7 years.

yeah, you gamble and sometimes you lose. That happened to me with my medical insurance. we have a high deductible...which we went through in a flash when I broke my collarbone...you win some, you lose some.
