i was looking at the turn signals that nascarkeith has in the "where can i find those turn signals..." post, and love the way they look,,,, my question is are they going to pass inspection? are they DOT approved? does that even matter?
all i know is when i bought my bike, i said to my sales guy, "i cant wait to chop off that rear fender." and he responded by saying i wouldnt do that and in the end i would have to buy a new rear fender to pass inspection. but everyone on here has done a fenderectomy including myself. so whats the deal.
thanks for the help
mr.questions
I have NEVER seen any bike shop fail a "custom' bike cause of mods... as long as you have good tires and the lights and brakes work :thumb: you pass..
I wouldnt wory about the shop not passing you cause of the fender or signals :thumb:
... you are from PA right ??? Hear those LOUD ASS HARLEYS romin the streets... think thats legal? :icon_razz: Bike inspection stickers in PA are a joke... it doesnt matter what you have on youe ride... they will pass it :thumb:
yeah, thats what i kinda thought... im located around erie PA and i hear bike running around all the time with super load exhaust. the shop is Cycle City of Erie, they are ok, but told me that crap.
how about the non DOT approved thing that is mentioned on their website.?
My friend actually has some LED short stalks for the front of his CBR600rr, and they aren't DOT approved. The shop was about to fail his inspection, when he piped up and go them to pass it by saying "I just installed it AFTER I got te bike inspected"
I think that the most imortaint thing is that you feel safe with them...
there isnt a single shop in PA that will not pass you cause you have "not DOT approved lights" as long as you have em.. and they work.. thats all that matters...
As a matter of fact in PA I dont think signals matter all that much... you can ride w/ no turn signals and use hand signals as far as I know.
Its best to find a good local bike shop... not a "dealer"... to do your inspection and keep your ride in tip- top shape.
the cops in PA dont give a shaZam! what you have on your bike... PA is an AWESOME place to ride!
so that whole DOT thing does carry some weight in the inspection world.
i really like the lights,, and know that my shop is tight about their habits... some would go as far as saying "GHEY" ( i dont know why there is an H in that word.)
and the reason why i call that place my shop is because i got talked into this 3 year warrenty package from them, and now all my work is done there for "free" (i already paided for it, 1300.00 dollars) so my inspections will go through them and maybe ill make those guys install the lights just to use them for every penny i paid.
maybe i will maybe i wont ----- about the lights
Do you think that the shop will know that they are not "DOT" ? I say have them put em on (If thats included in the $1300.) ( I doubt it)... Otherwise do it yourself and have them inspect it.. they wont fail you cause of a fenderectomy or flush mounts..
How many R6's do you see sporting the FULL FENDER ? more than that... I have never even seen a fender on most bikes here in PA
All DOT approved equipment will state "DOT APPROVED" on the lens
scottpA_gs
very true, the bike that they are trying to get me on after 4 months of riding is the GSXR 6 and the signals on that are flush in the rear at least. those bastards and their getting me all upset.
those lights say "not DOT approved on the website"
piss

Ok.. I am not sure if all lights say "DOT approved" or not... still I know that most shops dont care...
I have the tail light from an R1 on my GS.. and I know there is no DOT stamp on em.. I also have the head lights from a Buell Lightning and the signals from !?!?? None of them say "DOT approved on them..
Still ... I have an inspection sticker on my bike that says 05/07
Thats all that matters :thumb:
I say go to another shop... a "Local" shop.. not a dealer...
I know if you spent some $$ on a deal w/ them that you want to get your$$ worth.. but hell.. bring your bike here to Jtown, PA and It will be inspected as long as you
A: Have lights
B: Have Brakes
C; Have insurace
... You will get an inspection sticker for $18.00
Sorry for the confusion... I meant all turn signal equipment should have it if approved. I don't think I've ever seen a headlight/taillight lense stamped with it.
:thumb:
I dont think that my signals say anything on em... they are so small I dont see how they could..
If they do or dont... I dont think that most shops care :thumb:
I think that I must live in the most bike freindly city on the planet...
Most bikers do what they want here...The sport bike guys get to have (cool lights and tear up the streets..and the (Harley) guys get to have pipes that wake the dead and there are no problems....there is never any trouble, and actually ... not many accidents involving bikes either :thumb:
jtown here i come.

Sweet.. :icon_mrgreen:
Make the ride down and you can get your bike inspected here :icon_mrgreen: I know my shop wont care :thumb:
I know my V&H Exaust is WAY!!! past PA standards by way of noise... NO ONE CARES! :)
Come on down! we can ride! .... its not that far to Johnstown... as a matter of fact I was in Butler, PA... Near you?? for a bike rally on Saturday... took like 2 Hrs to get there .. but it was a sweet ride :thumb:
Honestly I wouldnt sweat it.. You should be able to shave your fender and put WHATEVER signals you want on there.. as long as they work.. no local shop will care if they are DOT or non DOT
really appreciate all the help scottpA_gs :thumb:
im inspected until next year, but when that day comes,, ohh yes, i will have some issues to work out with my shizzzop.

I don't think they are DOT approved. It doesn't matter here in Alabama though. There is no inspection. As long as you pay your money for your tag and have insuracne you are good to go. They only problem would be if you got pulled over by the police, but unless you get a bike guy who really knows his stuff who is to say whether they are stock or not. There are so many bikes out there who can keep them all straight. According to the bike shop where I bought them we are not required to have turnsignals in Alabama just a headlight and taillight. Also safety was a concern but not a large one. I ride on a lot of backroads and even the city streets and freeways are not busy around here compared to most places. I usually just blink the brake light a few times before I turn to get people's attention. Thanks for noticing the bike! :thumb:
The first thing I did when I got my '04 GS was to lose those honkin' stock turnsignals (and the entire rear fender). I replaced the front and rears with those oval aftermarket flushmount turnsignals. They really clean up the lines of the bike but are near impossible for vehicles to see except at night. I lived in PA for most of my life and know how tough their inspections can be, however to be safe when getting mine inspected recently in Missouri I took it to a custom chopper shop and didn't have a problem since most of what they normally see is probably illegal.
