1. At what RPM should I shift, to maximize Gas Mileage?
2. If I've ridden more than about 5 minutes, then I park, about 20 minutes later I notice 2 small single drips on the ground--about 1 inch in front of the stand. I check my oil frequently and the level is not going down. Obviously this fluid is coming from SOMEWHERE...where? ANd do I need to be concerned?
1. 5-7k
1. Probably around 5k or 6k, but it'll be somewhat annoying since the HP doesn't start to kick in until 5500... Then there's a jump around 7-8K
2. If it's engine oil, it could be coming from any number of places... Oil Plug, oil filter seal, tach cable seal (I had a pretty bad leak there), head gaskets... Your best bet it to search around the underside of the bike and engine looking for wet oil... Then trace it to its source. If it's only a few drips at a time, there may not be any noticable change in your oil level...
But, there shouldn't be any drips at all... I finally got my '01 to stop leaking... YAY! Now I just have to stop running it at 10K RPMs and maybe I'll stop burning oil. :cookoo:
Of course! Ideally, there are no leaks. This is like one or two drops, about twenty minutes after parking it. No more. It looks like it comes from immediately above the stand mount (the seal on the underside, below the shift lever). Or, at least thats the only place its got any indication of leaking. I only got it a month ago, and its done it since I got it, and the level hasnt gone down. Its so confusing.
About 5k for optimum fuel efficiency, I got about 64-66 mpg. during my break-in period.
And have you been checking your brake fluid, and lines. But it does sound more like oil from one of your seals, and if you don't ride more than like 20-30 miles it is probably not major concern right now, but keep an eye on your fluid levels every time you ride. And you might want to start putting a little cash a side to fix it sooner than later.
Hey, congrats on the bike! I just got myself an 01 a little over a month ago.
:)
mine leaks from the same place, its from where the gear shifter goes in to the engine,
i wouldnt worry about too much, you could get another seal for it if you are worried about it :thumb:
Since I'm already askign retarded questions, I may as well ask a couple more...
1. How often should I have the thing serviced?
2. Whats the proper tire pressure for a 225lb guy?
1. Every 4000 miles change the oil, check the valves and synch the carbs.
Every two years (every other year) change the brake fluid and the fork oil.
2. 33psi front, 36-40 rear. See what feels good for you. Start 33, 36; then try 33, 40, so you can really feel the difference and to calibrate your butt-o-meter (seat-of-the-pants feeling).
