So I posted a little bit about this in the for sale section, but I figured more people would see it here.
Basically, I just completed the MSF basic rider course over the weekend and I'm hooked. I've been browsing craigslist twenty times a day for the past few months looking for a good bike. I saw this GS500 and was wondering what you guys think about it http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/mcy/186290064.html. He said it was painted black because the stock color looked pink and that the tach was broken when the previous owner tried to make the gauge faces white but broke it on accident. And he also said the foot pegs were not broken, just worn out. Also, it has apparently not been in a crash to his knowledge, and the oil was changed about a year ago, but has only seen about 1,000 miles in the past two years. $1500 sounds pretty high to me though. Would I be insane ot pay that much for it? What's a good offer to start at if I like what I see when I check it out tomorrow? Thanks a bunch!
-Brian
Since he's "very firm" on the price, tell him to go screw himself and wait for a better deal. If it's been ridden for that little for that long, you're probably going to have to rebuild the carbs. If it's been outside, then probably a new chain. Tachs aren't cheap. NADA says $700-$900 for typical condition. Knock $150 off of that for a tachometer.
Bandito,
You can do much better for that price.

Anti-body? WTF!
Without telling him he's stupid, kindly offer him $500 for it and tell him the offer stands until you buy a different bike. Then buy a tach from me for $50. ;)
Hey Jake...
How is the presidency going? haha

Meh. I got out of politicing.
I've too many skeletons. Plus Ed, Old Man Wilson settled down. And Joerocker flew the coop. So I have nobody to poke with sticks anymore. So I decided to just be the President of Cool, which is working out for me nicely. The women here all want to have my babies, not to mention Alphafire X5. He wants my babies bad!
What are you riding these days?

Dude that's alot of scratch for a bike in that condition. I bought my 92 a year ago for $1600 but it was pristine. A buck a CC on a beater is fair but when your gonna be payin 3 bucks a CC for something that age it better be in excellent shape. Speakin of oil its been 3 months time to do mine again. Thanks for the reminder.
HAHA the presidents of coolness can jack any thread we wish. what are they going to do?
Anyway, I still ride my 2002 GS500. I really like the new ninja 650R's, but I don't want to sell my bike quite yet. I love it.

You can do WAY better for that price... I bought my '02 with no scratches, except the stator cover, 3992.3 miles, aftermarket LED brake lights, aftermarket fairing, clymers, cover, all records of dealer maintenance, etc, for $2200, about a month and a half ago..

hehe, I'll definately keep you in mind for the tach.
Again, I hardly see GS500's around here, and they are all pretty expensive, should I offer a max of around 1300 or so?
And is there a good way to tell if the carbs need to be cleaned...

The bike runs like crap.
listen, i just bought my gs500 for 600$ and painted it my self flat black. and it costed me 40$ to do it the right way. my bike has 6700 miles buy a bike that needs minor cosmetic work, its funner that way too plus it will give you time to learn the bike while your fixing it, and nothing is better than knowing the bike your riding
Bandito,
Don't get over excited. There are decent deals out there. Where are you located? I wouldn't pay that much for that particular bike. There are better GS500's out there. Just don't pay too much because you want one NOW.

I'm up in Seattle, I know I shouldn't get over excited, but damn I wanna ride.
ya that's a rip..bought my gs '01 with 2200 miles for $1800
