Title: Needing an upgrade.. Advice?
Post by: 97gs500e on July 27, 2006, 02:13:57 AM
So I rode my Suzuki GS500 for over a year and put about 5,000 miles on it before I sold it.  I feel like I'm ready to upgrade but It won't be for about six months.   My dad rides an '05 SV650 and after giving that an extensive test ride, I have to say it was fun, but I think I want a bike with a little more balls.  I've also had some saddle time on an '05 CBR600RR, but I'm not a big fan of the power delivery of I4's.

I want to buy a new bike, something original, an import, but under $9,000.
I'd prefer a naked bike, but I can deal with fully-faired if its a sweet bike.
I've been thinking about the SV1000S, Daytona 675, Monster S2R, etc..
I also thought briefly about a new Speed Triple, and that bike is sweet, but I dunno if I am ready for that much power..

So I need suggestions.  I'm 21 years old, and my insurance would be considerably less on a non-Inline Four anyway.

What should I do?  Seriously.  No Busa or Desmodeci recommendations please.

The insurance being expensive isn't based on the fact that the bike is an I-4, it's the fact it is a supersport bike.

Insurance for an Aprilia RSV Mille Or Ducati 999 is probably equal to that of a GSX-R1000. Ducati 749 is probably similar to that of a GSX-R600, too.

It's because they are supersport bikes covered in fairings, not their engine configuration.

Daytona 675 is going to have high insurance as well, as it is not only a faired sportbike, but a brand new model as well.

The SV1000 and the Triumph Speed Triple have about the same power, I believe. The Speed Triple a bit less, maybe.

Non-price-dependant stuff:
Ducati Monster S2R 1000
Aprilia Tuono
Suzuki SV1000S
Triumph Speed Triple
BMW R1150R Rockster
BMW R1200S

I know you said you wanted new but have you thought of the speed 4?  I actually saw a new one with 5 miles at a dealer here.  Looks really nice has less power than the triple.

One thing that sucks living in the US is that we don't get all the nice looking naked bikes like they do overseas.

Get the  "Duc" because chicks dig big ducs. <got to be careful with my illiteration here >

The 1000 is big but they make a smaller Duc also.

The Duc in all black really looks good. It is on my "to own" list after I get my kids out of the house.

Don't listen to your friends. Get what you want.

Go look at the Buells. If you like what you see, see if you can get a test ride. If you like how it rides, buy it.

ok ok..  I don't like looks of Buells and/or their radical features, i.e. front brakes, huge frame (for gas), gigantic logo on tank, etc.  Do they even have a middle-weight that can hold its own against: R6/GSXR600/600RR/ZX6R??  I'd probably buy an Austrian KTM before a Buell.

Japanese, Italian, or English. Thats it.

Didn't Honda bring back the 599 this year?  That would be a fun bike to have, but it's a small  I4 which you seem to not like.

Sounds like you basically want a Truimph 675 or Kawi Z750 with the fairings ripped off.  :dunno_white:

The 599 is overpriced and under-teched. Old F3 engine, carbed and everything.

And since he specifically said "No I4s", a lot of good bikes were left out.

when I said no Inline Four's I guess that did leave out a lot of bikes.  I just don't want the typical GSXR or CBR that everyone else has.

I pretty much worship the Brutale 910, but it's nearly double what I'm willing to pay right now..

I'm thinking a z750 might look cool minus the front plastic, replaced with a round headlight and some SM bars or srinath bars or something.  But then again, I keep going back to the Speed Triple, even though it is an extra G..

I can say this with no fear or reservation:

Get a Honda VTR1000F Super Hawk 996.

I'm not fluffing my bike or anything.  But it is probably the best street bike, pound for pound.

Feel free to flame me if you must.  But it's true.

whatever you end up getting, if it isnt the S3, you'll always go back to this. Spend the extra cash, dont be so rigid in your thinking. A year from now you wont be looking back thinking "Yeah, am I glad I didnt spend the extra $1000"...I vote speed triple. those things kick ass. I've seen one on the track too...

One of my riding buddies has got an 04' Katana 750 and he loves it, I've ridden it a few times and think its just like a GS on steroids, its got great power, but not way too much, pretty comfortable still for a sports bike, good breaking power, and like the GS its carb's and air cooled so if you take care of it you know its reliable.

And I don't think his insurance is all to bad, it is a sports bike but not a super sport, and I think the classification, HP, and CC displacement is what really determines the insurance rate. You should probably research that, maybe even go with a Katana 600 or YZF600 or something along those lines.
