Title: taking off airbox
Post by: will123 on July 28, 2006, 03:48:13 PM
Has any1 ever taken the airbox off of a GS500F? And what would be the good or bad effects of it?

A lot of people have their airbox off, with the K&N lunchbox filter.  It's a lot less restrictive, and may produce more power, especially if properly jetted.  But someone was recently saying that carburettors like still air to draw from, so it may have some disadvantages, too.

I took it out & put in 2 K&N pod filters (2 cones instead of the 1 "box"). it was easy. I just loosened the tank & pushed it foreward to clear the hoses, unscrewed some obvious screw I think, and it just wiggled out.

Well, you can't take it off w/out replacing it with an aftermarket filter.  No filter at all = dirty air in the engine and vastly accelerated wear on the internals.  If you decide to drop a K&N filter on there instead of the airbox you need to rejet the carbs to compensate for the increased airflow.
