Title: Better Sound??
Post by: hzk6rz on July 31, 2006, 01:09:41 PM
Question, i've read several of the articles posted on this site about aftermarket exhausts.  I know that generally you do not gain any horsepower and if so, only a couple.  I'm trying to find an exhaust that will make the bike sound more powerful.  Something closer to a 600 sport bike sound - Gixer, CBR, Ninja, etc.  Is there anything out there that someone can recommend or do i just have to wait until i'm ready for my new bike and get the 600?

Thanks

All stock mufflers have to adhere to the same sound limitations.  They all sound like sewing machines unless you put an aftermarket exhaust on it.  So your stock muffler is just as loud as a 600 SS.

The 600 Supersports are inline 4s. The GS500 is a parallel twin. Two different engine configurations produce different sounds. There is no way you can make a twin sound like an I4.

If you want a better sound, I've found that revving the bike into its powerband helps a lot. It's quiet down low, but it screams up top.

I went with the jardine exhaust and it sounds great quite loud with a nice tone to it, "at times" it sounds like a big single but never a four but at least now it sounds like a real bike not a sewing machine :thumb:

I just put a Yosh on mine, definitely more aggresive note to the tone, but it's still a low-tech 2V/cyl 487cc DOHC motor.  Never gonna sound like a new school 600 I4 that has liquid cooling and fairings wrapped around the engine killing the note.

After mentally fighting about how much I hated the tone of the stock GS, I've finally realized it's a good tone in and of itself, just not something you hear every day.  That's a good thing.

People love how the Yosh sounds, and I'd have to agree.  Combined with eliminating the stock airbox either by pods or the lunchbox, you get a nice intake rush to the tone as well.

I know that Vance and Hines makes a full system for arround $300 I think, that would be the easiest, since it's a bolt on full system, but if you're cheap and handy with a hacksaw and welder, you can install just about any aftermarket can. I welded on a muffler from a yamaha yzf 426 (super fast dirtbike that dosen't have to meet sound regs)  and now it sounds like a Ducati! Twins with a pipe won't sound like a 4 but they sound much better. Just go listen to a Ducati, Suzuki SV or TLR or honda Superhawk with a pipe on it.

Georgia and Texas are probably the only states that I've ever noticed to not actually have dba levels written in there muffler laws, unless you live in certain counties which might require emissions testing and dba requirements. I'm sure there's a few more out there, but most states do. And most states if even not having a dba level written in the law, probably still require a muffler in good working order, and not to be tampered with or bypased in any manor.

Tampering with the exhaust system is illegal in PA

Curious about some of your state's motorcycle laws-click here  http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/laws.asp
And/or check with your local Transportation Dept.

And any available slip-on muffler is going to help your bike sound a little better, but its still a small twin cylinder. I would still check the manufactures dba level compared to your states allowable level.

He's not selling them yet, is he?  Last I saw, they were still in prototype stage.

Srinath flange + wileyco sounds awesome.

There isnt one shop in PA that cares what type of pipe you have on your bike. I do understand what the "Law" says.. but  :icon_twisted:

One of my personal PA favorites is the law against "modified fenders".  Ok, so that makes about 90% of sportbikes instantly illegal.

On the noise level issue.  Isn't there some federal reg?  I'm pretty sure when I bought my SV two years ago reading on a sticker something to the affect of "this exhust system complies with the federal noise limit of 90db at xxxrpm" or something like that.

My stock '05 sounds like a glorified moped.  I hate the sound of it in 1, 2 & 3 gear .  I'm searching and reading all threads about exhausts, air filters, jet kits, etc.

Rev it higher. It sounds better if you use the engine's full range.

I'd rev it higher but i only have 250 miles on it or so, so i'm stuck in the d@mn break in period still.  uggggggggggg

250miles? Not to start a break-in philosophy threadjack, but I say the heck with it, whack the throttle every now and then.  It's a blast, and according to some, a good thing to do.

Yes its a federal regulation on manufacturing exhausts for use in the USA after 1982 I believe.

Yeah, there are laws out there that don't really make sense, and are not enforced until they become extremely noticeable, most of the time, kind of like speeding, no one usually gets pulled over doing 5mph over the speed limit, but start pushing 15-20mph over and then your very likely to get stopped for speeding.
And  I'm not pointing a finger at anyone, but I always try to help somebody from doing something illegal (Guess why), if you were to take out all of your baffling from your exhaust I'm willing to bet you don't get more than five hundred miles on your bike before getting stopped in a state that has dba laws in act, but using an aftermarket exhaust seems like a more sensible solution.
