i tried that kreem stuff once before and that was enough for me,, i use POR-15 now. its a much superior product and easier to work with.since ive seen threads here saying that the GS tank is prone to rusting mine will be done this winter,,also,,since i live in a climate where temp and condensation cycles are year round mcycle tanks seem to loose there pickling quite rapidly. so i practice sealing the fuel system on any bike i drag home thats of "x" amount of age even if there is no sign of rust or gunk in the tank, difference has been notible. www.por-15.com

also,, i used 15-40 rotella on my last oil change. motor seems to have smoothed out better, seems to pull better,,has anyone else tried the rotella product and been satisfied??

Kreem is fine - I like the fact that its temporary, can be removed or added to if need be. POR cant be added to, removed or anything. Use kreem in many thin thin layers. That works better than one thick layer.
Cool.

visual person hmm..

last summer i had my bike apart 5 times in 2 weeks. from helicoil to gasket to air filter cleaning. i can rip apart my top end and put it back together with minor repairs in the course of an hour now.
i know more than i ever wanted to know about the internal workings of a gs500e.

so tackling this rusty/varnished gas tank isnt that big of a deal its just time consumeing and annoying.

I know what you mean. I have bought 2 tanks instead of fixing the others I have and I already have the POR kit. But then if you say what I paid for them....

its 120$ and two weeks if i send it out from the local shop...

or 30$ and a night of my time, along with getting to know the carbs better and installing a new fuel filter...

hmmmm...

if you only knew my track record with this bike, i have two friends that will not touch it again (both mechanics) becasue she is prone to having time consuming, evasive, annoying, petty, (low cost usially) issues.

ive blown a head gasket, dropped a rod bearing, blown a valve cover gasket(twice), had that pesky petcock issue, not to mention found a broken needle ( and the bike ran) been left on the side of the road multiple times, been covered in oil, blew a head bolt x 3 (not sure proper termonology resulting in three helicoils), pulled the motor twice, bent the handle bars due to inexpierience in gravel, and countless other little things that im not remembering right now (including fork seals, blown when i got it). not to mention the complications with normal rutine maintnece, (two hour oil change becasue a bolt was stripped)
if the gs is gonna have an issue, i guarentee you mine will be the one to have it, and  with complications, its my luck. the rusty gas tank was just another kick in my shins...
im so used to it i dont even get upset about it anymore.

you dont want me to get started on the race R6 ive worked on... duc tape and zip ties baby!..

Sounds like a standard issue GS

The current 2 assembled engines I have in my bikes were both purchased in a state of repair. One was in several boxes, toasted rod bearing. Interesting putting an engine back together and hoping all of the parts are there. The other spit a shim through the head and damaged one of the cam lobes, it is Megacycle cam. Still need to send it back for repair. I probably could have it repaired at work, I work in a tooling shop.

I have not had your record of problems but I have had to change a base gasket at the track. Took a little over 1 hour (on a hot motor) and ready to rock again. I guess upgrading/rebuilding the motor before every track day has its advantage. Needless to say, I can pretty much install the top end blind folded.

Then there were the valve cover gasket leaks, case cover leaks....maybe I should go back to a 2-stroke.

that's what it's all about, tho.

could i have bought a new, warrantied SV650 or cruiser?...yes.

would i be getting the same education from a new bike that i am from my free GS5CE?...no.

isn't it some kind of right-of-passage to have to rebuild/build your own motorbike?

That's right. You do have a lot of stuff. What's tiring you about building them? Just tedious work?

i have plenty of room and a team willing to race them... make a WI run and just drop them off :P

well...
tank is mounted... ran her around the block... the carbs must be gunked up so im looking at strippin them off and cleaning them again as well as looking into rejetting her again..
the bonus.. i know she is a little better running wise, when she does die she recouperates faster.. but is still annoying as hell wanting to rail and not having a bike that will cooperate...
grrrrrr

It is more of the lack of time. With working 2 jobs, 7 day/week, I only have 2-3 hours at night. Then in 2 weeks I start a night class 2 nights a week. Then my g/f sometimes comes over late in the evening, gotta have time for her :icon_twisted:
Actually I have a lot accoplished since you were here. Both bikes are down to the small stuff. But I just keep changing what I am doing to the street bike. Now I am going to be using a 04 tank and 05 tail so now brackets for the sub-frame need to be fabricated.

Too bad, my truck and trailer are not big enough. Actually my ex-race bike is somewhere in your area. He drove from MN or WI to pick it up to race in CRA (?). He was winning with it until he blew the motor.

Have you seen my old bike?....

*update#2*

im not allowing myself to get excited until i get more than 10 miles on her, but, last night after recleaning the carbs and taking out the fuel filter (kinks in the line)
i finally made it completely around hte block w/o her dieing....
