Title: What do I do with this busted GS?
Post by: Chuck on August 04, 2006, 02:31:39 PM
I have a '01 GS.  My friend has a '01 GS.  My friend T-boned a car with his, bent the frame and forks, bought a GSXR600, and gave me the busted GS.  It starts and runs and drives, although with everything bent.

So now... what to do:

1. See if someone can straighten the frame for cheap.  Install some GSXR forks.  Have another GS.  (I wouldn't trust a straightened frame, but give me your opinions.)

2. Try to find a titled frame, install some GSXR forks, and the rest of the GS parts.  Have another GS.

2.5. If I can't find a titled frame, get a salvage frame, said GSXR forks, do some other stuff, build a track bike.

3. Dismantle it, trash the frame and forks, put the parts I think I will need on a shelf in the garage, sell the rest.  (I'm sure everyone who needs something will prefer this option!)

4. Something else?

I'm leaning toward 3.  For the cost of a frame and forks I could buy another GS.  2.5 was inspired by this ebay item: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4625417027 but would be kind of lame.

Someone give me a better idea, please!

If it were me I'd strip it, use the engine for a kickass go-kart, and sell everything else.  Split the money with your friend for hooking you up.

we just bought an abandoned go cart project kit
the lower cradel was welded to the go cart
and then cut up after he bought a convert.

straight frames are not hard to find
clean title or salvage title are both streetable

stay away from parts only stuff.....hard to explain when you want to sell in the future.... even if your is a legit PO frame

gsxr f/e are sweet.....and a must have upgrade

ok, anything bigger than 37mm/single disc is a must have upgrade

I'd part it out & use the money I made to put a GSX-R front end & other mods onto MY OWN GS, not the totaled one...

Turn the GS you already have into a track bike? then if you go down; BINGO! you've already got replacement parts. I for one can't afford TWO money pits  :thumb:

find a donor gs500...maybe someone selling a parts bike or a salvage yard sellign a non running bike. All you need is a titled frame and maybe some extra parts. then you could build a custom gs500.

The variety of opinions in this thread mirrors my internal conflict.  :)

I'll keep my eyes open for a frame (titled is better than not).  I'd much rather have a bike than a pile of parts.  l3uddha has a point, if I get GSXR forks I could put them on my current ride, and put my old forks on the busted up bike.

Not many GS500's in the upstate NY region, so if I find a frame, chances are good I'll pay mucho for shipping, which is a pain.

Yeah, a second bike to have around is aways nice, but don't spend more money to make street able if you know for sure you wont get your money back in return if someday you sell it. Or having a bunch of spare parts around for free still ain't that bad.

suprised no one has said this though :)  . mod that motor . pull that motor out . ship it off and have it bored and ported ( or reslived .. i'v heard here they have sleaves in them . i'v been told you cant bore sleaves but what do i know .. most my motor work is from dirtbikes :P )  see how much it would cost to have the bottom end redone ( with better parts of course .. you will have to find someone willing to forge it for you :) ) yes .. money is gonna be high on it .. but if it was me .. i'd start shiping parts of that motor out to make it a better stronger motor :)  throw the frame away . keep the good parts on it .. you never know what might happen . then once you have that other motor ready to put back in a bike .. do a motor swap :)  keep your old motor do the same to it .. then you will have one ready to use if somthing happens to that one .. and as that one collects dust on the shelf look for that gs frame thats just waiting for a good buyer :)  put this new frame out there put that motor in it and bam you have two bikes :) yes ..it may take a while ...but still .. i think it would be worth it .. if any thing .. at least .. send the top end off and have it reselived .. when it comes in . swap the heads :) you will have a little more HP ( you have to do the pistons to :P ) but thats just me :)

That sounds like a lot of work.  If I want more HP, I could just ride my FZR600 instead of my GS500 that day. :)

Well, I'm not so much interested in impressing or surprising anyone.  I'd much rather have fun riding a motorcycle.
