Title: Why did they use nylon fasteners to hold the windscreen on??!!
Post by: nascarkeith on August 05, 2006, 09:25:16 PM
I don't get it.  I had to take my windscreen off because the black plastic behind it was scratching the black decal around the edge.  I got the problem fixed but broke one of the screws when putting it back together.  Things were fine with two screws then it started to rattle so I found two really short screws at a parts store that worked for the side and after I put them in I broke another scew in the center hole.  It doesn't rattle and I didn't want to take things apart to get the broken screw out so I left it.  Is there a good metal replacement for the windscreen mounting screws on a GS500f?! :dunno_white:

Noticed the same thing mine would go crazy at 5-6 rpms, i tried to tighten them and strped them cause they are not metal screws.

This is a total pain, my screen shifted so a strip of clear plastic is below the black detail.... just looked a bit ratty for me, trird to loosen it off and realign and couldn't retighten them, then I lost one while riding.... should have used new screw or even some glue, oh well.... live and learn.

I think the screen has plastic screws to let them broke in case something hits the screen, the rider for instance, so they acts as fuses for safety reasons, otherwise you might get injured by screen edge. So I thing the better replacement for those screws would be more plastic screws... Just my 2 cents.

Metal screws will cause the screen to crack when they are tightened and when the screen vibrates in use. There has to to be a slight amount of give in the screws to absorb vibration.

Where would be the best place to order some replacement screws then.  I am not a fan of my local dealer.  He tried to make me by a bigger bike when I wanted the gs.  Is there a good online source or local parts store.  I have already checked Lowe's, Home Depot, and Advanced.  Thanks for the info.  Plastic screws make more sense now.

STOP!

I just converted my 2005 GS500F to a naked GS500.  I have been saving all of my fairing/windsheild fasteners for this exact kind of situation.  Let me know exactly which fasteners you need and I'll mail them out to you, free of charge.

For the benefit of anyone else looking for plastic fairing bolts. They are freely available here in the UK from several on-line bike parts outfits so my guess is they must also be available from similar sources over in the US.

Thanks for all the advice and especially thanks to Turd for offering me his fairing screws.  That is super nice and generous!  However I found some screws around here and seem to have my problem all fixed up so please extend your generosity to the next gs'er who needs help.  Who knows you may want to reconvert one day.  Anyway, thanks for such a kind gesture.

I'm glad that i'm not the only one that had this problem.  I've had my bike about a month and one day i noticed that my screen wasn't totally alligned so i removed the screws (or they should be called POS plastic screws) - yea i understand the safety reason behind it but they are basically disposible and have to be replaced if you unscrew/screw them in more than once.  Anyhow i tried to realign it and it went right back to the way it way.  i was afraid i was the only one with the prob.  :)
