Title: Still Won't Idle, (i have searched)...sorry
Post by: Richmore on August 07, 2006, 02:30:29 AM
Hi guys,

Erm, ok... so I have been having problems with my GS' idle since they day i got it, she just would not idle under 4500 rpm and was running super rich.

I finally got the parts and the time to completely rebuild the carbs, replacing all o-rings, pilot jet's and floats etc, and this has helped a lot - no more rough low speed riding, not running rich and she starts almost instantaniously when hot(she didn't before), but she still won't idle when hot under 3000rpm. If I set it lower than this she seems to bog down and eventually stall out. Grrr!!

Pilots = 40
Mains = 120
Float Height = 15mm
Pilot/mixture screws = 1 turn (360○) out
Valve clearances = All within spec.

I just can't seem to figure this idling problem out and i know how much you guys know. Please help or this problem will be the death of me.  :)

Thanks.

1 turn out seems awfully little. Most years have listed values between 1 7/8 and 2 1/2 turns in the Suzuki manual.

So here comes the dumb a** question, does the pilot screw on a 1990 GS control how much air or how much fuel i.e. if i back it out will this be richening the fuel mixture, i have looked at the carbs whilst they were in bits but just can't seem to figure out which one (air/fuel) this screw controls.

Thanks again

It controls fuel. Out is richer.

And for the 90 the manual lists 2 1/4 turns.

Why are you running with 120 mains.  That's smaller than stock, and stock is lean.

Yea 125 mains and 3 turns on air screws minimum. I seem to be consistently having them at 3.5 to 4 - maybe time to revise it  O0 ...
Cool.

Actually 120 is stock on many European models, and they seem to be just fine with that.

Must have to do with fuel prices...

Not according to my Haynes manual.  For 'E' models the euros come with 40 pilots / 125 or 127.5 main jets depending on year / market.  The pilot screws were between 1.75 - 2.50 full turns out.

According to my Suzuki manual the earlier models (don't remember up to what year; don't have it here) come with 120. Later years get continuously larger. (GM51B, Germany)

I know that mine (92 GM51A, Switzerland) runs on 120. It is a tad lean, but I like it just fine that way, more responsive down below. (This is mostly referring to float height, though.)

The 120 mains are what the haynes manual says for that year european machine along with the 40 pilots. I will have to check it properly to see if it is running lean/rich and I gues adjust accordingly.

The haynes spec for the pilot screws on my machine if I remember correctly was 1 1/2 turns out, I will have to look at that again I think.

Really what I am trying to find out is if the symptom I described - bogging under 3000rpm and then stalling - sounds like it's too rich at idle or too lean?

Thanks.
