Title: Bike Sitting for 2 years
Post by: Norcon on August 07, 2006, 07:39:41 PM
hello, i recently acquired a bike that has been sitting for 2 years, part of that time it was in the new york rain/snow/sleet

I toy with cars on the weekends, and i have done a good amount of work on my car and a few of my friends.

I would like to get this bike up and running, i am wondering where to start.

I know the battery is dead. I tried to jump it and the starter just kept turning, no ignition.

I know the bike just had carbs rebuilt before putting into storage.

I have very little experience with carbs and dont really know whats wrong with it.

How do i troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance.

It's likely (certain) that the carbs are completely gunked up with old gas.  You'll want to clean and rebuild them (http://gstwin.com/carb_work.htm).  While you've got the carbs open, you should probably rejet (http://gstwin.com/rejet.htm) them to 40 pilots and (I believe) 125 mains.

That, off the top of my head, will probably get it running, but I wouldn't say running well.  The valves may need adjusting, and other fluids are probably gonna want replacing.

hey thanks for the quick reply, i finally got around to it, i cleaned out most of the carbs, didnt want to take apart the springs, the float bowls and most of the carbs are cleaned out. The carbs were rebuilt right before i took posession of the bike anyway.

anyhows, i got the bike started up but with one small problem, the engine cuts out when i take the choke off.

If leave the choke down 1/4 of the way, the engine idles nicely around 1500 or so, but once i pull the choke up and release it, the engine just cuts out, i pull the throttle slightly and the bike cuts out .I try to start the bike without usint the choke and the bike will not start.

My question is whats the problem here? I'm thinking there are adjustments i need to make on carbs.

Are you sure you got the carbs cleaned out all the way? It sounds like one of your jets may be plugged up. There is an idle mixture screw on the carbs that may need to be turned out. Sometimes it takes a few minutes of warming up before it will run without the choke.
