Title: Dead throttle
Post by: Dwn4whadever on August 08, 2006, 12:55:18 PM
I have a 1996 10,000 and some odd miles on it. I jetted to 148s and 40s with a lunch bow filter and with 3.5 turns out and two needles. Oh and a stock exhaust. When i roll on the throttle hard its like the bike wants to die. If i roll on it slow its ok till like 6k and then it starts poppin kinda. This has got me stumped, its kinda like its running lean and rich. I will have video and pics of the spark plugs in a bit.  :thumb:

Looks rich to me.  But I'm not so good with plugs.

148 is pretty big for stock exhaust.

Yea bud, looks very rich to me.  I would get some smaller mains and do the whole trial and error thing.  I know folks have had trouble running an aftermaket filter with the stock exhaust, it seems to be a difficult combination.  Some 130-140 range jets might be a better fit for that setup.

Thanks i just hope its the Mains. Another thing is i need to get the right combination. Im going to need to ride the bike to the place to get the exhaust put on. I have to beable to get there and back. I guess this is going to be an adventure.  :thumb:

Hey im going to bump myself here and give you guys an update and maybe i can get some more help. I got some new plugs today gap them and installed them. Started the bike. It ran fine while parked and idled.  When i dropped the throttle open it did not die out like yesterday. But it did do a little popping while at idle. Now i thought popping meant it was lean, and if so explain the plugs. :thumb:

I can't explain the popping, but if it's not rich, I owe you a pizza.

Popping can come from being rich as well. It's caused when the unburned fuel combusts in the exhaust pipe.

Also, the popping happens during idle, but the state of your plugs is mostly determined by WOT. So it my be lean down below but still rich at WOT.

I'm tellin ya now without mods you want 127.5's max. Even with all the mods you will reasonably make your never gonna run anything larger than a 135 main. Leave the pilots alone #40 non bleed type is perfect. Ignore me and you'll just bang your head against a wall until you move down to that size and figure out I'm right. I spent an entire day in the twisties yesterday running 8 to 10k on the tach. My plugs are perfect. When I say reasonably I mean Pods and race exhaust. Spend a crap load of money and fit a gixxer head and bump you dispalcement up another 100 cc's then you can use the jets you got. either spend 8 bucks max and get what ya need to fit your engine or spend several grand making your engine fit the jets up to you. :flipoff:

Then somebody already jetted it. 122.5's came stock, it was already 3 sizes larger. Shoulda changed plugs and checked to see how you were running before changing jets, BTW congarts on the babies and I am an opinionated ass but I been turning wrenches for over 20 years now. So if I peed in your cheerios my apologies.  Good luck  :thumb:
