Title: do katana 750 rear shocks work (bolt on)?
Post by: banner on August 09, 2006, 12:54:22 AM
I'm looking at buying a potential Katana shock from a 750 and it has some sort of a cable coming from it. Its from a 1995 model...will it work?

Thanks

Just curious could you post a pic of the shock you are trying to get?

I assume that little dial is to adjust the rebound dampening but I think it might be tough to mount on a GS500.  It's the same problem if you buy a newer model shock with the remote reservoir.  I think the easiest, best solution is to find one with the little dial on the shock body to adjust it.  That shock might not even be the same length as the one Pablo recommends since it's setup differently.  I don't like the idea of grinding down the linkage.

Srinath had an earlier post that said to just rip the control cable off.  Not sure whether he was joking or not, but maybe the cable is just a remote system, that can be removed, allowing you to still adjust the rebound at the shock... :dunno_white:

+1 about not wanting to grind down the linkage though...

You can always get another pivot linkage so you can leave one in stock form.

btw...I have several steel linkages.

The pivot linkage is part 1 on the diagram above???  I couldn't find anything called a pivot linkage in the parts diagrams...

What is the standard linkage on the 04+ GS's?  Steel?

Yep #1. I do not know their proper name.
Not sure what years have steel or aluminum. Steel will be painted black and aluminum will be silver.
That pic is of a steel one.

89 is aluminum - 90 may also be ... but definetly 91 on is steel. On a GS - now on Kat etc no idea, but B6 or B12 had the same aluminum one as a GS I heard - werase said - its got a 33C casting. You want 33C.
Cool.
Srinath.

Sorry, I actually had my bid set quite a bit higher, it just went .49 over...  :dunno_white:  Must have been the bid increment...

I'm planning on installing the rear shock this weekend...can't try it out though, my bike has no cylinder head right now...

I'm waiting on my racetechs until I get my head issue finished.  I'll probably pop the front forks off this weekend, but won't reinstall everything.

KILLING ME!!!

I need to know!!!!  My only concern is that it will be TOO stiff.  Fitment isn't an issue.

pull...remove the cable and there is a 3 position lever that you can easily reach while on the bike

well, I said fuck it and had to buy the 750 rear shock.  I figure if anything I'll have to turn around and sell it again.

Looks like a remote resevoir for it.  Good Stuff.

That's the exact same style I have ... and ... it doesn't fit.  The section of the spring here:

is too wide and won't clear the swingarm.  We need the other style with the adjusting collar on that end to provide the clearance I think.  If you're able to make it work let me know how you did it.

Well... damn you.  I'll figure out a way to make it work... and then I'll sell you the idea of how to do it.

okay.

Well.

Fack.

It doesn't work.  Lots and Lots of pondering and potential involved.... but it will not work without some serious modifications.

While I had the Katana 750, 600, and GS500 shock out, I took some measurements.  I'll have those to you all very shortly.
