I just ordered a sprocket set and chain today from the local suzu dealer. I tried a 14 tooth front sprocket becuz the dude at the counter said this would give me more low end power. Anyone else have experience with changing the ratio of the sprockets??
You might reconsider the 14t front. Most here go for the 15t front. Yes you get more low end with both, but you also sacrifice top end a little with the 15t and even more with the 14t. The difference being with the 14t you run the risk of your chain binding or at the least straining it to make the small return.
general consinsus is go with a 15t although Werase643 has raced with a 14t as well. For the street a 14t may be too much at lower end and losing too much at top end, IMO.
now when you say lose some at the top end do u mean it will top out at 90 instead of 95 or more like 85 instead of 95?
With a 15T you will have the same top speed as you will not red-line in 6th with the stock sprocket. My '01 will redline 6th gear with an indicated top speed of just over 115MPH. It would do the same indicated speed with the 16T, just as slightly lower RPM's. With a 15T, I am showing about 350-400RPM across the board higher at the same speed over stock. 14T will put you even higher. Not advisable if you ride the highways much.

I've topped out at 120 in 6th gear at 9400rpm with stock 16t sprocket. Maybe at same rpm I'd be at 115...either way it's faster than I need to be going on the streets.
Well highway speeds around here do not exceed 70, 75 max and most are not over 60 so i think ill stay with my 14t. So if I go into 6th gear and hit redline @11000 ill be going 110 instead of 120 I might be able to live with that. If it becomes too unbearable are there other mods to increase high end power? my next mod will probably be a K&N and rejet not sure what size yet tho. This is all to go with a cobra F1R that came on the bike.
I'm running a 150/40 jets with 3 1/2 turns on the mixer and 39t rear and 15t front. I have the K&N Dual flange pod filter and a Cobra F1R. This is a pretty good set
Either way, you can try the 14T. If you find it's revving too high at cruising speeds on the highway, you can switch to a 15T for a measly $12-15 or so. It's a 5 minute job.
Thanks for the help guys, yea i got the front sprocket for 9 bucks so if it doesn't work out i won't be breaking the bank.
Gitarman,
I'm assuming you have the stock 39 tooth rear sprocket. Please let us know how the 14/39 performs. :thumb:
so,
its been awhile, hows this setup been working for you?
