Title: New bike . . .
Post by: gtownsend on August 10, 2006, 10:16:10 PM
I just picked up my new bike this afternoon(in the pouring rain).  A 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa GSX 1300R.  I wasn't really looking for a new bike, but I got a deal I could not pass up.  A friend of mines sisters had it for sale.  Seems that her 18 year old step-son went to the local Suzuki dealership and put $3,000 down and rode off on his new Hayabusa.  He did not have a motorcycle license or insurance on it and the dealership let him take it home.  When Sofie(the step-mother) got home, she was furious and would not let the boy ride it anymore.  She kept it locked up in the garage for months.  The boy put 143 miles on it the day he bought it and that was all the riding that has been done on it.  He bought it in early May.  My friend was telling her that I liked bikes.  She told him that she was going to sell her step-sons bike and to let me know about it.  She told my friend at first that she would take the $3000 off the price.  I called her and ended up buying the bike for $6500.  That is only $1500 more dollars than I paid for my 2005 GS 500F ! ! !  Why she sold it for that is beyond me, but I didn't want her to change her mind, so I borrowed the money and brought it home today.  I didn't ride it yet(rained and is still raining as of now), but I let it run for a bit under the carport.  It doesn't look as big as I thought it would parked next to my 500.  It doesn't have a center stand, but I am going to look into getting one.  I can't believe I have a HAYABUSA! ! !  Well, let me go check on it again and go to bed.

sportbikes do not use centerstands. faux-pax...buy a rear stand.

How long you been riding again?

hehe, going from the slowest sportbike in the Suzuki lineup right up to the fastest.  Be very, very careful man.  That bike is nothing like a GS500.

rear stands are better and safer than center stands, your better off getting the rear stands.  Pittbull makes some good ones.

Good luck on the busa, have fun but becareful.

yea you'll want a rear stand to lift up the wheel. I think around $100-$150?

That is a lot of bike you got there; be VERY careful and take it slow.
I don't know how long you've had the GS, but even if you've been riding it for a few years the leap from a GS to a Busa is HUGE.
Just treet your new bike like it has way too much power for you and cant corner nearly as well as the GS. It's not so much learning to ride all over again, but teaching yourself restraint. You HAVE to respect that bike or it'll mess you up bad.

with that said; be carefu, be very cautous of the people you ride with, and enjoy!

That would be my plan too, then buy a used Gixxer 750 and have cash to spare...

Sweet deal on the bike though!!!

I actually went in reverse order but with a slightly smaller difference in bikes.  I never once had the throttle completly opened on the old rf900r even though one wheel riding and triple digits were acheived.  On the gs500, full throttle every day.  The difference between my two is huge so to step up even more...I could only imagine.

HaHaHa.... it would cost me nearly as much for 1 year of insurance as it cost you to buy that bike.
Good luck, I hope you're experienced enough for that bike - it doesn't leave ANY room for error.

i know you see everyone say be carefull and think "i know, i know".   but really be careful, that's more bike then many people need or can even handle.  that said, grats, good luck and have fun.

And we can all say "be slow, be careful" but we all would have done the same thing in a heartbeat. Just remember Rothensberger.

But DUDE!!! Doesn't the Busa use the GS motor as a starter?

Congrats, don't let these comments here scare you. I bought the GS because it was all I could afford at the time. When the wife is out of school next year am getting a R1 for my self and she wants an FZ6. IMHO the GS in a city and traffic environment requires more experience than a begining rider, I will feel more comfortable knowing my wife is on a smoother running 4cylinder so that if she really needs to get out of the way the power is there. A big bike is much more comfortable because you have more power on demand, you dont have to flog it and run WOT. Now the flip side is that the temptation is there to do stupid stuff. If you can not resist that temptation than you will get hurt. I have owned approximately 15 different street bikes over the past 20 years. there is a familiarization period you need to go through with a new bike it is different for every individual. No one has ever been 2 up on a bike with me before I have had several thousand miles of riding a new machine under my belt. So if you impress some girl and she wants to go for a ride remember that 2 lives are in your hands and your experience or lack thereof will decide who lives or dies. Ok off the soapbox I have a group ride today in the twisties down by the lakes.

WOW... I almost lost my mind in trying to get full coverage insurance on my hayabusa!!!  This is unreal, it is going to cost $700 more a year than I pay for the full coverage on an '05 Chevrolet truck.  Liability is the only way I am going to be able to go right now.

Make sure to scuff the tires with sand paper, should still have waxy coating on them from factory. I have seen many :o big bikes dumped within 200 miles, first tight turn applying throttle= on your butt, bike grinding down the road making those nice sparks.

Good for you.  If I were in your shoes, I would turn around and sell the GSX-R1300.  Nadaguides has it somewhere between 8000-10,300.  You'd probably get close to 9,500 for it without too much hassle.  That's $3000 profit in your pocket for doing nothing.  I'd take the $3000 and save it for a GSX-R 600 or 750 when the time comes.  Until then, stuff it in an www.hsbcdirect.com (http://www.hsbcdirect.com) earning 5.05 percent.

My $.02.

Regards,
Randy

Thats a very good idea, because nobody really needs a Busa, theyre really nice bikes and all, but a 600 sport bike is PLENTY of power enough, and a lot cheaper, and much safer, more forgiving than hittting the throttle on the big busa and doing something crazy, but either way, have fun with the new bike, OR enjoy the 3000$ you just made for playing middle man

Alot easier to get in trouble with a 600 supersport than a busa, at least to me it seemed that way.  The throttle control on the supersports are more twitchy (sp? ).

I was thinking if we were only allowed to drive or ride vechiles (sp?) with enought power to get us around at the speed limit we would all be driving Yugo's.

The 'Busa is not the fastest. The 1K is....   O0
Just because a bike has the most displacement doesn't make it the fastest    O0

"fastest" is a pretty broad term.

tight track, big track, straight line from a roll, straight line 1/4 mile, straight line top speed, etc. - the fastest in one, is not neccessarily (and in some cases, no way they could be) the same as the fastest in another.

stop watches in any of these scenarios don't do justice the subjective feel that can only be had by experiencing it yourself.  some people like the top end rush an inline gives, but maybe not like the flatter down low response; some people like the responsive mid range of a v twin or horizontal twin, but not the flatter top; some people like ringing out smaller displaced engines, some people like the lazier feel of the bigger displaced engines.

these preferences aren't going to be the same for everyone.  at the end of the day, you just gotta get on it, try it and see what you like yourself.  if you end up with what you like (assuming you can handle it), then you found a good match for you.
