Title: Break a motorcycle seat lock
Post by: blackey on August 13, 2006, 11:58:02 AM
as mentioned in previous posts, i recently purchased a '97 gs500-e the only catch is she didn't have the seat key. (which is different from the ignition key).  So at this point i NEED to get under there as my fuel system is (i believed) to be clogged.  So my question is....

What's the easiest way to break a seat lock?

I have tried to hammer in a flathead and turn, but the flathead twisted, then broke. any other ideas out there?

Well since you already destroyed the lock...explaining how to pick it  isn't going to help....

Take a longish- cheap screwdriver  ( -like the one you just broke..  or a piece of thin metal...like a screwdriver...) bend the tip over-it may break..it's ok as long as the end  of it bends......a few inches up from the end put a kink in the screwdriver ( 10-15 degrees..).
On the right side/ brake side  of the bike lift up on the seat... you'll see the part where  the seat hardware hooks into the catch that's attached to the bike--
at the back of this is where the cable for the seat release is hooked in......

Take the tool you just made-while lifting up on the seat.. and push the cable etc over and the seat will pop up ( it's on top of the black piece...)...

Find some gunpowder. Put about a half a teaspoon in the lock, using a straw or other small device you can insert into the lock. Once its in there shove a piece of detonator cord in there. And light it. Blow that sucker out and hey presto you can lift the seat off.

Can you reach the cable with a pair of wire cutters? If so problem solved.....I cant be be arsed going out to the garage right now to see if its possible.

Light candles at both ends of the bike and assume the lotus position on the floor facing the lock. Draw your entire being into focus on the keyway and think Free Thougths.

well if you have gunpowder hopefully you'll have a gun.  at which point you can just shoot the lock off, just make sure to hold the gun sideways cuz you'll look cooler that way.

There's a cable that runs from the lock cylinder. to the latch on the seat.  Good luck reaching it.

If everything is installed correctly you can't just pull on the cable. Its sheath is fixed on both ends, so you just pull the sheath. So: cut the sheath or break it loose from one of its endpoints, then pull.

Just get a locksmith to come drill it out for you and replace it with a new lock. I bet it would be cheaper than destroying your seat and latch and having to buy a new lock anyway.

ya'll are some destructive ....blah blah blah

everything you cut/rip/drill will have to be replaced

a locksmith would pick the lock, take it apart and make a key

if you yank on the outer housing..... it will open the latch, stupid blah blah.... :icon_rolleyes:
then you can do one of 4 things
1 remove the lock and have a key made
2 remove the lock and take it apart and not need a key....any key will work
3 remove the cable from the lock and attach a zip tieto the end of the cable...then just pull on the zip tie
4 remove the cable from the latch  cut a small hole behind the latch so you can easily reach it from under the fender and manually trip the latch when you want to remove the seat

also it all works better if you push down on the seat to relieve tension on the latch

WTF - No dont break it ... OK get a pick or something that is thin and has a hook and a handle ... stick it in the lock mechanism and you want to get it over the lever arm that pulls the cable and you sorta want to get past it and on the cable. Then hook it on to the cable and not the lever and take it to the back of the lock - away from the part where you put the key ... by the time you get it to that, it will have popped the seat, else pull down. you are in effect pulling the cable that you actually pull for the seat release. Once you have the side cover etc off, you can unbolt the lock and leave the cable there with a sorta lever on it type ... you gotta make it, but its easy.
Cool.

I was under the impression he had already mutilated the lock opening trying to get it open. Hence picking it wont work. Get a professional, a locksmith to drill the lock and save the plastics and seat from being destroyed trying to break, pick, cut, remove the lock yourself. Get him to replace the lock for you and jobs a good'un.

Srinath is right.

why be so complicated and destructive?   I used a hanger with a small bend at the tip.  lift seat as high as you can and you will see where the wire goes. insert and pull. mmmmm.......pie.

most hardware stores carry lock cylinders you can use to replace the one you need.

I was talking about the lock side of the cable, not the seat. BTW you can make a tiny hole in the fender and pick the thing that way too.
Cool.

that reminds me, on my bike I can just pull the c-clamp that holds the entire lock in.  then I just turn it.

on new bikes it may be diff, or if youve never taken yours apart you may need to push up on th eclamp, I think thats how its installed from factory.
