Title: RVertigo's gonna be pissed (but I'm ok)
Post by: NiceGuysFinishLast on August 15, 2006, 08:15:13 PM
Yep, you guessed it. Went down tonight. Damn... that was quite possibly one of the craziest things I've ever done. Was following one of my fraternity brothers home from a local restaurant, since I wasn't quite sure where I was, and I didn't feel like wandering around Atlanta until I found Tech again (fairly easy, actually, just look for the Coca Cola building and head towards it ). We went through a light, and I went through a yellow/red, it was close. So I was looking behind me to see if there were any cops/make sure I could change lanes to my left. I turned around and

BAM!!!!!!!

He'd had to stop because the guy two cars in front of him had decided suddenly that he wanted to turn with no blinker. It was completely my fault, I KNEW I didn't have enough following distance, that's why I was changing lanes to the empty lane. I don't recall completely, but I'm fairly certain that I didn't even touch either of my brakes. I hit him doing (at a guess) somewhere between 20 and 30 mph. I did a somersault (flip?) over the handlebars and landed on my ass/back. Never touched my head, not a scuff on my helmet, nor a scuff on my jacket and gloves either. Jeans are untouched, and tennis shoes (yes, I know  :nono:) are completely fine. Never know from looking at any of my gear that I've been down. First thing I did was run to his door and apologize profusely. Then I went to the sidewalk and laid down to catch my breath cuz I had knocked the wind out of myself, and the adrenaline was making me shake like crazy. Some guy honked at me. Like I WANTED to be laying in the middle of the road next to my wrecked motorcycle. Dumbass... My brothers picked her up and brought her to my sidewalk, and I looked her over. She started up immediately on PRI, which is heartening. I looked her over, nothing but superficial damage, rash on the case guards (Thank GOD I ordered those!), the rear grab bar has somehow been pushed INTO the rear plastics, not sure how that happened. Handlebars are bent, and the clutch/turn signal/horn assemply was torqued way forward, but I twisted em back around enough to ride home. They followed me home. I learned the worst damage on my way home. I smelled burning plastic. Just as I had feared, the front forks are bent enough that the fender rubs the headers. Mmmm... melty plastic!!

Anyway, I'm fine... the bruise on my back/ass is almost as big as the one on my ego. That was just dumb riding. I'm still telling myself how retarded I am. Don't worry, I WILL be getting back in the saddle, and I WILL be leaving adequate trailing distances!

Tomorrow I'll post pics of the damage, and a WTB post for new parts, as I'm sure I'll need a few. Right now I'm off to pop a few tylenol, and probably go to bed.

I'm posting this from a friend's computer, as mine hasn't been repaired yet (completely unrelated.. I wasn't carrying my laptop or anything..), so I'll just say TYIA for your well wishes, and when I get a chance, I WILL get on here and respond to any posts.. just might take a day or too.

Also, Brian, I got your package, it's waiting at the school post office, I just have to pick it up. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow on my way to health services..... I may be a bit delayed in actually going to best buy with it though, but I'll do what I can!

Damn dude, tough luck!  I'm super freakin glad you weren't hurt though.  I'm not proud to say it, but I nearly pulled the same thing as you a few months ago.  It happens, but take it as a learning experience.

We'll help you get the GS back on the road.  Ride safe dammit!

I've had more close calls than I care to admit of the same type this summer.  It only takes a second for it to happen.  Glad to hear you are ok and the GS is repairable  :thumb:

Back to reality...

I'm so glad to hear you're ok.  Please...  PLEASE...  PLEASE...  go get checked out by the campus doctor/nurse...  (definitely go to the nurse if she's cute).

I hope you feel better in the morning, my sticky brother. :thumb:

Dude!  Not cool!  You're a frattie!

Seriously, I'm glad you're relatively unscathed.  I think I got worse from landing on my ass on the porch in front of the office.

That's good you didn't get hurt too bad. I've had a few close calls the past couple weeks.

The same thing happened right after a stop light, someone turning but I was able to stop. After a few seconds, I remembered to look in the mirror and make sure the person behind me stopped too.

At the same light the following week, an old lady in her big Lincoln towncar almost switched lanes into another biker. At the next stoplight, he rolled up to her window and made sure she knew that she made a mistake.  :nono:  Not sure what he said but I'm sure she'll remember at least a couple weeks.

On the freeway last weekend, this lady cuts me off by switching lanes a few feet in front of me. A couple miles down, she almost does it again while I was right next to her.    :2guns: Thinking of investing in a louder horn for such circumstances.  I didn't even bother using it because I don't think she would've heard the little horn on the GS anyways.

DUDE! HOLY CRAP. WTF?!!?!? I'm super glad you're okay and that you aren't badly injured and that your bike is (relatively) okay. How's the tank damage? If there are minor dings you can get one of those Ding King dent removers from Pep Boys or something. They work well for minor things. The grab handle might have bent the subframe a little bit (why it is pushed into the plastics) or the plastics might have been pulled up OVER the grab rail. Unbolt everything and inspect damage and if it doesn't bolt up correctly then figure out where it's tweeked. If your tail plastics are scratched it sounds like an excuse to get some '05 black ones to match the bike better! :)

Seriously. I'm glad you're alright Nick. I don't think I could handle you getting hurt on the bike.

Also, super freakin' awesome about getting the package. I can't wait to see if this works...

Well, lessee... No mirrors. That's why I was looking behind me. Broke em, and haven't ordered a new pair from SVriders yet. But they'll be on their way later this week.

Brian, no tank damage AT ALL. NONE. I'm so freakin happy bout that. The tail plastics actually survived with almost no scratches at all, a few dings in the stickers, and that's it. Except that the grab rail pushed down into them and cracked them all apart. So yeah, I gotta find some '05 black ones. I don't even understand how they got the way they are. The damage indicates to me that the bike went end over end.. but I know there's no way in hell that happened. I'll post pics tonight.

Man, I woke up this morning, and I am SOOOOOOOOOORE... so I'm popping 3 ibuprofen every 6 hours or so, to help keep the swelling/stiffness in check. Back to painting for me, I'll talk to you guys later..

EVERYONE MUST STOP CRASHING!  FOREVER!!!  NO MORE CRASHING!!!

Especially something like that...  Rear ending someone?  DUDE!!!

Glad you're ok...  Now remember this:  Crashing is WAY worse than a ticket.  Only look for cops when you're ABSO-f%$king-LUTELY SURE you're clear all around.

Cool dude, I appreciate the offer. The bike's kinda my low priority right now. I just found out that my laptop's unrepairable (well, not cost effectively) and so now I gotta shell out ~$700 for a new one. That's $700 that I don't really have, so the bike goes on the back burner until then. I'm thinking about selling my guitar to help pay for stuff....

Oh sure...you get YOUR crash in first, and then tell the REST of us, "no more crashing!"

Seriously....+1,000,000 on the "no more crashing" part.... I'm glad you BOTH made out with minimal injuries to your bodies....but...please....no more crashing....my blubbering-big-baby-mama-pandy heart can't take much more breaking.  :kiss3:

Ouch! Sounds like your damage is similar to mine, those damn fork tubes are pricey. I'm glad you were able to get it running though, definitely a good sign.
