Title: HELP my helmet is too big
Post by: notAdub on August 16, 2006, 12:46:02 PM
OK, so when I went around to local shops trying on helmets I had a pretty good head of hair, and every helmet I tried on I was in an XL. Since then I have shaved my head (much cooler in the hot summer) and I noticed last night on my way home from work that when I looked over my shoulder for a lane change the helmet shifted to the side ever so slightly  :o

So I shook my head back and forth and the helmet shifted around! So I started doing more research into helmet sizes and breaking in, and mine is definitley TOO BIG!!!!  ijust bought it and have only worn it for about 1000 miles.

I am pretty concerned about this, but don't have much money to buy a new one until I get at least some money back for the one I have.

Any suggestions/ thoughts on what it might be worth?  Never dropped in practically brand new condtion (looks brand new, but I have worn it)

It is a Shoei RF-1000 Light Silver with the cloth carry bag, all manuals and instructions, clear sheild and ever two white and black Shoei stickers ;)

I love the helmet though so want another one, but smaller, fit (at least when brand new) is fantastic, ventilation is superb!

*edit to add a pic  ;)

I dunno about Shoeis, but Scorpion helmets only has two shell sizes M and XL...  To make a Small or Large helmet, they simply use more padding in the liner...

So...  If you had an XL Scorpion helmet, you could order the liner for a L helmet and drop a size easily.

Shoei might do the same thing. :dunno_white:

There website says the RF-1000 uses  3 shell sizes, and 4 sizes of EPS liners. I just emailed them to see what I might be able to do with my current helmet.

My liner isn't supposed to be removable though :dunno_white:

I just measured my head as well (albeit with a retractable metal tape measurer :icon_rolleyes: its all i have) and it measured out to be 60.33cm which is on the bigger side of a large, which could be why with my 'fro and being new the XL fit well :icon_confused:

:o  WOW  I cannot believe Shoei customer service!!! It is TOP NOTCH!!!

I emailed them at 4:14 and got this response at 4:22
"The cheek pads can be removed and replaced with thicker ones to help tighten up the fit in the
cheeks.  In order to get more information on tightening up the center of the helmet, please contact
me at the number listed below.

Best Regards,

Shoei Safety Helmet Corp
Patrick Houlihan
Customer Service"

(with a phone number of course)

I just got off the phone with Patrick, and he is sending me out a set of padding to go between the fabric padding and the EPS liner to take up interior volume. I also ordered a thicker set of cheek pads. I went with a thicker set to make sure even after break in that it will still fit snug. I just hope  Ididn't order them too big as to make me look like this

...and no, this is NOT a picture of me.

Glad you could do something about it...  When I heard about that I thought it was pretty cool actually.  So, if my giant 24" head gets even bigger, I can just get the XL pads for my lid.   ;)

Haha, mines not too far from 24".   With my helmet at least, I can change the cheek pads to help snug/ loosen the fit a bit, but I felt I needed more than that, so that is what the extra pading is supposed to do once fitted between the top section of the comfort liner and EPS.  At least this is what I am hoping for, I REALLY don't want to take a 60% hit on a helmet this new and pricey.

But I did score an almost new smoked/mirror visor off of a co-worker for $10 yesterday :icon_mrgreen:

didn't shave the head 'cause of where I am moving, I shaved it 'cause I work outside and the North East has been in the upper 90's with 70%+ humidity this summer  :thumb:

Like the Shoei guy said, you can up the cheekpads. Basically, you want them to be as snug as possible when new. Give them a week or two to break in.

BTW, for a frame of reference, I wear a Large RF1000 and I'm a size 7 1/2 baseball cap.
