I've called my local shop and asked about the dynojet stg 3 kit, he then advised me that only if i planned on drag racing my bike, do i need the stage 3, and i should get the stg 1...wtf
Ok, the dealer called dynojet and they said they don't make a stg 3 for the 2005 model...only the stg one...
So, that being said, is that what i wanna get or what?
No, you just wanna buy the jets yourself from Sudco or the like. No real reason to use a jet kit, you can all get all the same parts cheaper on your own.
According to the rejetting matrix (http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/mikesgs500/rejetting/Rejetting_Matrix.html), you want something like 150 mains, 65 mids, and 22.5 pilots. But I can't vouch for those numbers, I'm more familiar with the older carbs.
That being said, the stage one kit is for bikes with an air filter and stock exhaust (I believe). It'll probably be lean with the stage one kit.
Thanks for posting that re-jetting matrix. I've been struggling for a while with my jets. This is very helpful. not to hijack a post but the PO jetted my bike with a performace exhaust and K&N airfilter to 122 mains 60 mid mains and 22.5 pilots on an 01'.... does that sound right to anyone?
also, can you tell me on the matrix it lists K&N(s) and K&N(p). what does the s and p stand for? and how do I tell which one I have?

Sounds like it will run lean to me, but I don't know much about the 01+ carbs.

I have no experience with dyno jets but from what I've read on re-jet posts here it sounds like with dyno you do need the kit, not just the jet screws. but I don't know for sure.
what are some of the symptoms of running lean?

s stands for stock airbox with whichever drop-in filter.
p stands for pod filters. They're generally a waste of money; get the lunchbox if you're going to upgrade. The jetting should be similar.
If you're running just a little lean, it's difficult to tell. You're engine will run hotter than with a richer mixture. Very lean and you get backfiring out of the carburetors when you give it gas. There's also often a noticeable lack of power when you're accelerating hard.
thanks for the help. my airbox is definitely stock but if the jets are the same for a lunchbox I will probably end up doing that, but first I need to get my carbs sorted out. I really couldn't tell if its lean, my spark plugs looked good. It does backfire sometimes but I can't tell if its from the carbs or the exhaust while I'm riding it. (i assumed it was from the exhaust, is it easy to tell the difference?)

The stock sizes are 17.5 pilot, 60 mid main, and
130 main!
Bump the mid main a size (62.5) and the pilot down a size (to 20) and the mains to 135.

Alpha: I thought 122 sounded small, but I didn't know the stock jetting. I was thinking they were 120s.

On the old carbs I believe they are.
'01-'02 US use 17.5 pilots, 60 mid mains, and 127.5 mains
'04+ US use 17.5 pilots, 60 mid mains, and 130 mains
BTW, this is all in the FAQ (the stock sizes, at least).

It's 122.5 for older carbs. I was thinking that with the mid mains, they went down a bit on the mains. Doesn't matter. I was wrong in my thinking, but right in the leanness.

I was just cought up on the idea that who ever jetted it before me had to have it running at some point. well now I'm convinced they had no idea what they were doing. the sizes they chose don't make any sense to me. what would be the advantage of a smaller main same mid main and bigger pilot?
