Title: Cut-out Zilch power.
Post by: Cal Price on August 18, 2006, 09:25:56 AM
The day after my electrical issue on the XS400, having recharged the battery I decided to give her an afternoon run-out. I had filled the tank and given it a liberal dose of Red-X, probably about double the prescribed amount. The bike roars of OK, I do about 2.5 miles up a slight hill at 65/70 mph and then start to loose power gradually shutting down to a stall.
Oh well I think it's all downhill home so not the end of the world but a mystery. i tried to start, plenty of battery, a couple of misfires and nothing. So after coasting at five or six mph down the gentle slope i try again, nothing. Another half mile and I hit the starter and off she goes sweet as a nut! I ride around the neighborhood for twenty minutes, park up at home and leave the bike ticking over nicely for a further five, it would normally chug-chug and stall after a couple of minutes, everything seems OK.

What is occuring? the only new factor was the Red-X carb cleaner, could this have shifted muck, caused a blockage which then cleared, advise please ??

Sounds like fuel starvation to me.  Maybe check the path from tank to carb and see if there are any blockages.  The fuel system cleaner might have loosened some gunk and it's blocking your fuel lines.

It still could be an intermittent electrical problem, affecting your ignition. The backfires at least point in that direction. Power loss can also be a symptom.

Still sounds like fuel starvation to me.  Cut your fuel off at the tank and tell me what your bike does.

Hmmmm, yeah there was some popping which I associate with fuel starvation, after the problem cleared I put her up to 10000 rpm and so worries so I am inclined to think "gunk" somewhere but given the history I have had with this bike I still have nagging doubts about the electrics. Wiuth luck I might find an hour or two to mess with it on Sunday/Monday.
