It's just a nasty-looking mushroom.  Richard Bayless thinks pretty highly of it.

Read it, it is not a mushroom, it is infected corn.

Actually it's a mushroom that infects corn.  I've tried it -- it's not so bad, although I'm not a big fan.  Actually the part that I dislike is the texture: it's like eating clumps of mud that then fall apart in your mouth.  :laugh:

It's a fungus, just like a mushroom.  Sure, it grows on corn, but do you know what they grow mushrooms on?  Typically, it's sheep shaZam!.  The only difference is that it's not so easy to cut the fungus off of the corn.
