Title: gear selector & new rider = help
Post by: sezemy on August 19, 2006, 09:47:48 AM
hi there

new to the world of biking, only passed about 2 months ago, my first big bike is a 1996 GS500e with a fairing.  The bike has been great and loving every minute of it.  However i have had one niggle that has been bothering me - where the gear selector is there seems to be oil or something leaking.  Now as I said I am really new so if this is something daft I do apologies.  The gears run fine - it did have a new gear selector fitted just before I bought it.

Any advice would be much appreciated

:)

Welcome!

It sounds like the previous owner dumped the bike (crashed), and all he did was replace the gearshift lever, without inspecting/replacing the gearshaft arm and seal.  Hopefully, this is not the case.  Hopefully, it's just excess chain lube, but to be sure, clean the area behind that cover, ride it, and then open it up again to see where the oil is coming from; if any more.

Hi there

Cheers for the reply, I recently fitted a loobman but I cant really say I noticed it before hand.  Will give what you said a try, thanks very much!
