Title: Left PRI for several days...HELP!
Post by: gsnewb on August 19, 2006, 09:21:48 PM
Hey guys,
I recently bought a 1994 GS500E.  It ran ok, with the exception of the high speed stall problem, which was alleviated with turning the petcock to PRI.  However, a few days ago...ok, 5 days ago, I forgot to turn the petcock back to the ON position before leaving it.  I came back today, started up the bike.  It started for about 5 seconds then died.  THEN, from a small outlet located behind the float bowls...looks like under the airbox area?...fuel or oil leaked.  A whole lot of it.  I drained the float bowls, then primed for a minuted, started it up, then died 5-10 seconds later.  Then the whole gas or oil leak came again.  It's been doing this this whole time.  Can't get it going for more than 10 seconds, dies, then spews gas/oil everywhere.  I don't know what's going on.  Please help!! thanks.

not for nothing...

but you might wanna pull your carbs and clean them.... sounds like you have some sticky issues going on with that in first place.

Thanks for all who looked.  I've decided to take apart the carbs and clean them out.  I don't know how hard this is giong to be.  I know NOTHING about bikes.  What limited mechanical skill I have has been on cars.  Is the guide on this site for cleaning the carbs a good one?  if not, where can I find a thorough one?  One thing I dont' understand is why there is an outlet for all this gas to spew out of?  it ran fine a few days ago but now decided to die.  Please, any advice would be welcomed!

EDIT: I looked at the pictures of the carb rebuild and now, i think that outlet thing that's spitting out gas, is on the bottom of the carbs, but i could be wrong.  Can anyone tell me if that outlet is supposed to be there?  THANKS!!!

Allow me to ask the obvious: did you refill the fuel tank with gas and try to restart the bike?

If you've left the bike in PRIME for 5 days, chances are you've lost your full tank of gas, and only have a tiny bit left in the lines/tank - enough to try and turn the engine over, but not enough to sustain an idle.

Your oil is likely diluted.

You have a float valve that does not close completely. With the petcock on prime, the carb(s) overflowed. that can go forward, into the motor, end up in the oil (bad). Check oil level and sniff the oil. If it is exceptionally high and/ or smells of gas, change it.

Alternatively it can flow backwards (seems to be the case more often) and fill the airbox. That is the oily stuff that flows out of the hose (it's the airbox drainage). It might well be that the stuff has soiled your air filter and that this is the reason she wont keep running.
