Title: Carb Rebuild Kit only up to 1993???
Post by: AR5ENAL on June 27, 2003, 06:40:44 PM
Akh...I was over at Tim's (scratch) to get that headlamp screw extracted.  It was rusted in there so thoroughly we just drilled it out, and I now have to retap the thread.  I have a zip tie there now...ghetto fabulous :nana:

Anyway, he pointed out that my carbs were in a very horrible state.  San Francisco bike kept outdoors = corrosion and rust on EVERYTHING.

Sooooo...time to rebuild.  I'm rebuilding the carbs and taking care of the entire fuel system now (de-rusting tank, new lines, inline filter, Pingel petcock) while I have the chance.  I want to get everything working again by the July 13th ride (I hope).

I saw the rebuild kit on partsnmore.com, but it says that it's only for GS's up to 93.  Is this a lie?  Mine is a 94, so it would suck to order two of these guys and not be able to use them.

I figure I'll be posting with lots of "Oh My God Help Me Please" stuff during the rebuild and mods...so I'll say no more until then :thumb:

I am pretty darned sure the carbs are the same up to 2001.  Someone can verify it but I think I am right.

I see a lot of stuff for the gs saying "up to 95 or 97" or whatever even though the bike has remained the same till 2001.

if the bike was running.....
the carbs probably just need cleaning,  usually just rust(sludge) and varnish(old gas)....AUTOZONE has the best carb cleaner.....I buy it by the half case..I think it's $1.47 a can ....yellow can, red lettering, little white cap....it still has some of that bad VOCs in it...but it works great!!!!!!!!!

what the hell is a carb kit?
i've cleaned up some crappy carbs before and never needed to buy parts.

oh yeah, i bought a little O-ring from LOWE'S for the carb top once

Those kit thinks have a bunch of o rings and most importantly they have that float bowl gasket. Those little and big o-rings are easy to get (BTW Autozone or other auto parts ones are better cos they are gasoline spec being made from neoprene or Buna-N - fancy name for neoprene than Lowes cos it usually rubber meant for water). But that gasket is the real reason you may want that kit. BTW the kit also has a float stop needle and that brass spout also. So at $12 a piece its not bad.
Cool.
