Title: Chain oil dripping from gear shifter???
Post by: Its Just Me on August 22, 2006, 01:42:18 PM
Just wondering if this is possible.  I've noticed over the last week or so that the bike has been dripping oil from the shift lever, but the oil level on the stick is still good.  I cleaned it all off so I could better track where it is coming from and now its back it seems to be way to greasy and black to be engine oil, but perfect to be the chain lube I use (Castrol chain lube).  Is it possible that chain lube is working its way down to the shifter from the inside???  Its not leaking at a very fast rate, but enough that there are a few drops on the garage floor and the bottom of the engine is a mess.

Yep, possible and probable.  Do you wipe off the excess or leave the chain all gooey when done lubing it...

Not sure about on the bottom of the engine though...

Yeah, chain fling is a common phenomina I get even with a Scotoiler.

It's often a combination of both a slight leak from the clutch pushrod or shifter and chain fling. Chain fling makes it thick, black and smeary, engine oil gets it to move. (A slight drip from the crank case usually doesn't lose enough oil for it to be noticeable on the dipstick.)

Once you accumulate enough thick gunk in there, thickened by some gravel, it usually stops...

Sounds like it's time to pop open the front sprocket cover and give it a thorough cleaning.  Last time I was in there, even Markus would have been shocked at how much goop accumulated in there.   :)

I second that.  Mine was NASTY when I opened it up.  Scratch told me he even found a couple of cigarette butts under his bike's sprocket cover once!  :o

yep, mine had a bit dripping on the kickstand. I cleaned it out once my front sprocket came in the mail.
