Title: turnsignal eliminator
Post by: DavidGS on June 28, 2003, 07:40:58 AM
Anyone modify a turnsignal eliminator yet to fit the GS? I have an extra one on the way and am thinking about installing it.

i installed one and i love it.  i removed the stock signals from the back all together.  makes it more streamlined and more noticable during breaking since it flashes.  plus, and i don't know if this was design, but my headlight pulsates somewhat during breaking as well.  the headlight doesn't flash like the break light does, but you can see it pulse.  i'm very happy with mine and would recommend it to everyone.  pretty easy install as well.

A turn signal eliminator makes the brake lights flash as turn signals.  Eliminating the need for the original turn signals in the rear.

I don't know for sure.  As always check you local laws.  I have heard that in order to be legal in some states, the turn signals have to be a minimum distance apart from each other.  Or a minimum distance from center.  That way it's more distinguishable from a distance which signal is flashing.  It could be hard to tell when one light is burning steady as a brake light and the other is flashing 2" away.

Here in Louisiana, you need turn signals to pass the state inspection.  The same one that cars have to pass.  Horn, all lights and signals have to work.  Proof of insurance and proper tread depth in the tires are also required.

I am in no way sure of this, but I think you have to have a minimum of 13" between the turn signals here.  I am not sure if they check this in the inspection.

I have been pulled by my local Highway Patrol because he did not like the headlight that I had on one of my bikes that I had a few years ago and did not give me a ticket but did state that the headlight was not DOT approved and at that point I did not have turn signals on the bike and he informed me that if the bike was sold new with turn signals it was required by law to have them for road use.  The removal of turn signals was not legal.

I asked him about custom bikes such as Harleys and the like that you do not see turnsignals on and he informed me that they could get legally away with it if they were using a custom frame/kit that they built up or had a shop build up for them.

He also stated that most police officers would only give out a ticket for no turn signals if the bike was stopped for something else such as speeding  of if involved in an wreck.

As for the Highway Patrol Officer that pulled me he did not give me a ticket just a written warning with no fine.  He was a bike officer on a BMW.

The bike I got pulled on!  1977 Yamaha RD400 ex-race bike

Title: DOT...

Well DOT approved...not even close...The whole t/s eliminator idea came up with the 99 R1's That gorgeous tail section, those twin tail lights and ugly t/s's. Obvious choice...make a gizmo that makes one of the tail lights flash...In 01 or is that 02...the R1 changed to that ugly row LED thing and they now started making new gizmos that tap into the wafer board and make the edge led's flash for t/s's...For the GS the sad part is that its tail light is ugly. The older one is uglier than the 01+ but still they could have done better with the 01+. No need to draw attention to it really. Putting little t/s or mouse type ones in the back sorta helps wihtout drawing your eye to the Tail light. Take them off and you are left with that ugly tail light in the nice looking back end with nothing to break the attention.
Cool.

Not even close...but that tail light is the real thing that ruins the rear end of it. Take off the t/s's and you'll see...
Cool.
