My bike had been making a horrible chunking noise when i shifted from neutral into first so i did a search on here and found that the likely culprit was the adjustment of the clutch cable and that it probably needed to be tightened.
so last night before my ride i went and adjusted the cable at the transmission. i wasn't sure which way was tighten (moving the fixed point towards the transmission or away from it) so i tried it one way and when that cause the clutch to not relase all the way with the lever squeezed all the way back, i just went the other way.
Anyway, i got it to a point where it doesn't do the violent clunking shifts into first, but now the release point on the clutch is all the way at the end of the handle release and i have like 1/4" of friction zone. Meaning i have to pretty much fully release the lever before the cluctch starts to catch and the travel from the start of the catch to full release is like 1/4".
Which way do i need to adjust the clutch? Increase the number of threads on the transmission side of the fixed point or decrease?
I hope this makes since. This is for a honda hawk not a gs, but this forum is way more active and helpfull. I got spoiled here when i had my GS.
Is there no adjuster at the handlebar? Not that it would make a difference, when you need it to disengage, you have to tighten it, which moves out your engagement point. The adjuster at the handlebar (if one) is the fine adjuster, the one on the engine case is a coarse, or larger adjuster. But, you can fine tune your clutch cable adjustment using the engine mounted adjster. To tighten (all motorcycles) screw the adjuster up, away from the engine. Loosen=down.

so to move my engagemment point in from the end of lever travel i need to lossen the cable i.e. screw it down towards the engine?
