Title: Add 1/2gal of capacity to your tank! it's easy.
Post by: ducati_nolan on August 28, 2006, 09:55:25 PM
You all know that when you go to fill up your bike you can either be lazy and just fill it up to the bottom of the filler neck, or you can spend 5 minutes trickiling another quarter gallon into the tank, it's a pain in the ass and not worth it if you're in a hurry. Well the reason that the last little bit is such a pain, is because of the air that's trapped in the top of the tank that has to bubble ot slowly through the filler neck. I borrowed my dads little 45 degree drill with a short 1/8" bit (it looks sort of like a heavy duty dentists drill) and drilled about six holes arround the top of the filler neck. I was able to fit an extra 1/2 gallon of gas into the tank, and I hardly had to slow down the flow as the gas filled into the filler neck. :thumb: it's great, and it gives you another 25 miles or so of range between fill ups. The drill that I used is hard to find and expensive but you could use a dremel or die grinder with a cutting disk on it to cut a slot or two that would work just as well. Just make sure you have a good fuel filter to catch all the crap that you're about to dump in your tank  :dunno_white: or figure out a way to keep them out of your tank in the first place. Maybee a can opener or some other sharp tool could poke a hole without creating a bunch of filings.
Good luck.

I don't think half a gallon is worth taking a drill to your gas tank.

If you are worried about the metal shavings in the gas you can take the tank off, drain it, drill it, blow out the shavings, give it a final rinse then put it back on the bike. I figure that with a fuel filter, the worst thing that can happen is it will plug up the petcock or filter, which would just require me to clean it out, which is just as much work as doing it right the first time. So since I'm lazy, I'll wait untill I need to do it. I think that a half gallon is enough of a difference to make it worth the small effort. I'll keep you guys posted  on weather or not anything gets clogged up. In the next two days ill put about 170 or 180 miles on the bike..........Hey now thats less than a full tank! Sweet O0

I get 204+ miles before reserve as it is.
On a recent back road trip going easy I went 221 miles before getting gas and never went on reserve.
Be Safe.

Reading this remainds me of a story from back in my childhood.  [wavy screen]

Dad - Son this grill won't start.
Me  - use a match.
Dad - Nah if i blow like this the gas will go over the ignitor.

[action scene]
dad blows at the grill and pushes the ignitor 5 times, no fire.  Dad leans closer, blows harder and clicks the ignitor 5 more times, no fire.  Dad leans even closer and while blowing clicks and clicks the ignitor and finally a fire is born, but two very bushy eyebrows were lost in the battle.

man i laughed at him so hard, it was great.  He smelt like burnt hair for the rest of the day

Let's see some pics and how you plugged them up so gass fumes don't escape all the time.

Yeah I didn't really think about the dremmel when I said it  :cookoo: Yeah you would definately want to get all the gas out of the tank and make sure that there were no fumes in there before you started grinding, maybee even fill the tank with water, definately too much work. A slow drill shouldn't be a problem but use at your own risk. As for the fumes escaping, that isn't an issue. The holes aren't in the top of the filler, but in the vertical part of the neck so the gaskett on the cap takes care of the fumes just like before.

Oh yeah, I think that if you could use some sort of can opener or something that would be the best, in terms of metal shavings and sparks. As for photos, I don't have a digital camera, but it dosen't matter cause you can barely see the holes, they ar under the lip on the top of the vertical part of the filler neck.

now, is the extra half tank really worth it?
how much do you lose thru the overfill hose?

I've never overfilled my tank. Mine holds about 4.1 gallons...if I nurse a bit more into him, I'll generally put 3.5 - 3.8 gallons, depending on whether I get too close to riding on fumes. That extra little bit is worth at least a round trip to or from work!

When I filled it all the way to the top of the filler neck with the bike on it's center stand I didn't lose any through the over fill line. I put it on the sidestand and it didn't lose any either. It was easy to do and I think it was worth it, but if you don't want to mess with it then it probally isn't worth it. And I'm not joking about the can opener idea either, I bet it would work.
