Title: Sad day - I finally dropped the gs :(
Post by: okayf00l on August 29, 2006, 09:51:16 AM
Well I finally dropped my bike.  I was taking it out of the garage and I carlessly dropped it on its right side.  I did everything I could to try and save it.  The bike tipped over and I held onto her until the last second.  The bike pulled me with it and I ended up flying over the bike and hurting my leg a little bit.  I immediately got up and looked down at my bike. I was scared to pick it up because I thought it would be scratched to hell.  This situation was definitely an ego shredder.  I picked up the bike to check out the damage and it was minimal.  The bike had previously been dropped on the same side but now it has case savers.  The case saver was slightly scratched and so was the muffler.  Besides that, the bike looks okay.

I learned an important lesson though, never back up your bike while you arent sitting on it.  Luckily there was minimal damage done to the bike.  The suzuki badge is scuffed up but I was planning on getting a new one anyways.  I love the gs and it just killed me to see her laying on her side.  I was mad for a minute but I feel okay now.

I just dont want to drop my bike again.  I dont think that will happen though because I will be extra careful from now on.  I was getting too cocky.

It's always a good lesson if the worst thing bruised is your ego. You've got the drop out of the way.... now go on.  :thumb:

I am the queen of drops, but I'm at peace with my dropping-ness...plus, I haven't dropped him in about a month!

Funny thing, I hardly ever back my gs up when I AM sitting on it, but thats because I'm short

welcome to the club!
I dropped mine twice the same day I got it

once you get more comftorable with it, backing it up will be easy. I stand in front of my bike, hands on the bars & my thumb hovering the front brake, stand it up, and walk it out slowly.

piece of cake, just remember to keep the kickstand down just in case! :thumb:

I stand on the left side with my hip against the tank and both hands on the bars, let the bike rest on my hip as I walk backwards and keep my hand close to the brake

I  came VERY close to doing somethign similar yesterday.  Since I don't get to title it until this weekend it is just sitting in my parking lot.  My neighbor is letting me use her ground floor covered patio to stash the bike when it starts raining until I can get a cover for it (hopefully today).  That means I have to wheel it up a curb to get it out of the parking lot. I found the perfect ramp and everything, rode around the parking lot a few times (I can't just let the bike sit all week, tags or no tags) and went to walk the bike up the ramp. I was on the left side and the biek started to lean, luckily it was towards me. I swear it was almost 45 degrees before I could shove it upright and keep it from falling into the corner of the curb I was trying to wheel it over.

I gotta get plates on that thing... running it around the parking lot just added to the torment of watching it sit

Ive done it twice, once while turning it around on it's kickstand(put the front wheel into a big crack) second I was actually sitting on it, and I dont know how it happened, I just fell over. Just scratches on the mirror, and a small one on the pipe. Oh well.

A drop like that only causes a few scratches...hitting a giant pot hole does what again?

DAMN

Sorry to hear about your drop, at least the damage wasn't to bad.  When my siste-in-law tried to move the GS she broke the clutch lever, scraped the barend and scratched the magneto cover thingy.  Oh and a scratch on the rear plastics  too.  Not sure if she droped it or slamed it

Well...  My incident was totally different.  I was trying to avoid an asshat that was merging into the same lane on the highway.  I was forced to the breakdown lane and into the pothole. :flipoff:

Is this some weird short/small people disease?  :o

The only time I dropped mine was a lowside. (Ok lots more pain there....)

But I move appliances and can flat foot the GS easily. (I know the moments when if I was smaller or not as strong it would have gone over though.)

Like when I nailed the brake mid U-turn when I was first starting out and just planted my foot and pulled. (WHAT A NOOB!)

So Pandy... Are you serious that you haven't had a Pandy moment in a couple?

Maybe the world is ending as we know it...

I haven't had a pandy moment since the Phaedrus Memorial B.A.G.S. ride on July 9th (I think!)!  :thumb:

I'm sure my other half will gladly point it out if I've forgotten one.....  :icon_lol: :P

(I had my baby lowered on July 29th  :icon_mrgreen:)

I always wondered if those case savers were worth anything. Do you think they saved any damage?

They saved my tank from getting dented when mine had a slight tip over the other week.

It must be.  I put one hand on the rear and one on the clutch and just back it out.  Although it weighs twice as much as my scooter, the GS is not all that much longer.  Even so, I can't just pick it up and move it around like I could with the scoot.  I nearly dropped it today while trying to mount (total Noob moment).

It seems like we've been plagued by a bike dropping epidemic lately. :cookoo:

What style did you have? I think OkayfOOl was riding my old GS (with your old ignition!) which had 2 point case savers.

Mine are the 3-point style, but the only part that got scratched on them was the front part, the front two contact point ones. The bike just kinda rolls along that spot when it falls.

When I had my '92, which had two-point case gaurds, the bike's tank never got dented when it was dropped. Only when it hit a curb!

Yeah, thats exactly what I did. I was trying to turn a right-hand u-turn into a spot, and tapped the front brake. OHSHIT. My foot went down and I held tight. Then again, I'm 6'3" and built like a refridgerator. No goin down for me...thankyouverymuch!

My first drop was in a similar circumstance.

Was walking the bike it started to fall one way and I just couldn't hold it. I lowered it as close to the ground as possible before being flung over it.

Luckily mine was on grass. I then placed a reminder to myself in my signature on here. I WILL NOT drop my bike.

I then had it knocked over by someone in a car park,

but that all pails into significance after coming off my darling GS at 80km/h. Now she's really hurt

I dropped a bike this weekend.  Forutanately it was gentle... unfortunately it wasn't my bike. I was riding my friends (dads) nighthawk, it was an older bike that he just uses to teach people on.  Hes got leather covers on the  clutch and brake lever that are loose and float around freely.  I was stopped with just my finger tips holding the clutch lever and the leather rolled and I dumped the clutch with my front tire turned. I did everything I could to keep it up but that nighthawk was a solid 200#s heavier than the GS and It wanted to lay down.  Fortunately no real scratches and just a bent clutch lever to show for it.  Later on that ride the battery gave out - we had to take it home, refill a cell, charge it and go back for the bike.  Last time I take his nighthawk out... i think its bad luck.
