Title: First crash, but holy crap it can wheelie
Post by: Queso on August 30, 2006, 07:13:25 PM
When in a hurry while stopped at a light, I'll rev up at a green light and drop the clutch for a quick take off. Usually the extent of my wheelies are a couple inches off the ground, even dumping the clutch at higher rpms. FYI - 2000 E, V&H, jetted, UNI filter, 15T front sprocket, and that's about it.

Today, in quite the hurry to get to work, pulled the same trick, and out of nowhere, the front end flies upon me like a squid on a liter bike. I pulled the clutch before being nearly vertical, and the front end dropped back down, bounced sideways, and I lowsided. A little scuff on my knee, and a little scuff on my elbow, but the most damage was to my freakin expensive Givi case. And a bent handlebar.

First thing I thought was "IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT!!!!" I stood it back up, hopped on, and took off. Seems to be doing alright. But dang, the thing can wheelie like nobodies business all of a sudden! I'd done the same thing dozens of times, and never had it do any sort of wheelie like that! I didn't do anything different, didn't change anything since last time I dropped the clutch for a quick take off, I just don't know where it came from.

Kinda confusing.

word of advice rev to 8000 rpm, lean all the way forward, then feather the clutch to get quick take offs without wheelie lean back further for wheelies//but glad to hear your ok but jus keep practicing and u will get better at wheelie takeoffs but be careful :)

Did you have lots of stuff in your top box?  If so, that may have contributed to the wheelie.  Glad you're okay though.

I honestly have no desire to wheelie. I'd much rather have just left the light quickly and uneventfully. But it was a good wake up call, I gotta chill out on the road. I drive wayyyy too stupid more often than not (being in a hurry all the time doesn't help). I've nearly pulled a few Pastrana's myself recently. I could've swore I was going to wipe out in a corner, but I forced myself to "look through the turn" and wobbled and peg scraped my way through the turns unscathed.

So, yeah... Methinks I'll start forcing myself to take it easier out there. Gotta get new freakin handlebars. And gotta fix my Givi.

WildBlue - I've had similar weights and done several successful wheelie free accelerations before, I don't know what condition was different this time.

You were only cut off 3 times? If that's a bad night for you, don't drive through Long Beach. I have to give my brakes a workout out here, the negligence of drivers out here renders them very dangerous.

glad to hear that you are alright.  I know from experience that the little GS can wheelie, as i had a similar experience as yours except i was trying to excape a mac truck that had locked its brakes and was looking to make me a pancake at a stop light.  Man i about crapped my pants when i heard that screeching.  Glad that you are ok, sorry about the handlebars and the case though.  Get your bike fixed and ride again just remember the lesson you got out of this.

Saturday I plan to work the bike over, there are a few other things that could use a bit of work so this would be a good oppurtunity to go over everything. I'm ticked about my handle bars because I know they aren't stock, but I don't know what kind they are (and they were really comfortable!)

Also, I seem to have done something to the lock cylinder. It goes between off and on just fine, but it's really tough to get the forks locked! So now I gotta dig into that too...
