Title: I Have a dream....TO BUILD SOMETHING
Post by: tussey on August 31, 2006, 01:45:38 PM
Ok here is the story of what I want to build.

It's a hose for my car. See, the spare is stored under a bunch of crap and periodically I  like to check the pressure on the spare. I want to build I hose I can clamp onto the valve on my spare and it will let me read the pressure and add air to it. It will be a 5 foot hose so I can clamp it on the valve and run the other end to some place where it can easily be accessed.

I've been to Autozone and Home Depot, no help there. I don't know where else to go.

Any ideas GSTwins?

Air hose right?

Go to a place that specializes in Air Tools...

You should be able to get an attachment that will clamp to the valve-stem...  Then you can look around for a gauge that has an IN and an OUT...  On the out, you put the hose to the tire and on the in you put a valve-stem type thing...

or did I total misunderstand what you meant?

i'm confused...

what exactly are you trying to do?

edit:
say the spare is in the trunk. do you mean you want to be able to check the pressure and add air if needed.... while sitting in the driver's seat?

You should relax.  Worrying about the air in your spare tire seems a little out there.  Maybe just toss a can of fix-a-flat in the trunk, and if you need your spare, and the spare has no air, the use the fix-a-flat on the spare then and there.  Then you'll no longer have to care if their is air in your spare.

Why not cut the hose off of a bicycle pump, and hose clamp another rim valve to the cut end?

Could you get a little tire pump with a pressure gauge and just leave that connected? It'll show you the pressure and allow you to add more as needed without making connections?

The spare is under a big carpet and on top of that is a big box housing a subwoofer meaning it's a piain in the ass to get to my spare. Last time I DID need it, all the air had leaked out so I need to periodically check the pressure in the spare. It would be AWESOME if I could just open my trunk look at a gauge and then fill it up via a valve, which would be connected to a hose that ran to my spare.

I picked up a (craftsman?) tire pump w/ a guage at Sears. It was $20 and plugs into the cigar lighter.

I use it for my bike all the time.

If I were going to use it for my car tires... I'd just throw it in the trunk for when I need it.

the cord is long enough that it will reach the trunk. you could even lenghen it if needed. plug the nozzel to the tire, and mount the unit on the sidewall of the trunk somewhere. the guage is actually on the unit itself.

you can open the trunk, see the pressure, and flip the switch on if needed. the downside is that you'll need to have it connected to the cigar lighter. I suppose if you're crazy you could connect it to the battery & splice in a fuse somewhere along the way. but then again... this whole thing sounds crazy  :cookoo:

+1  Just buy a 12V pump and if you need air... you have air. I use one too and use it to fill the bike as well  :thumb:

Or I could own a car that is awesome enough to have a cig lighter in the trunk. YAY VW Jetta!!

Plus making a perfectly air tight connection on the valve stem will be difficult.  The only thing you will achieve is making it leak air a little faster than it did before.  I agree with everyone who suggested getting a small air pump or can of fix-a-flat and keeping it in your trunk incase you ever need it and not worry about the spare's tire pressure.

You know by having your little gizmo you're many many many many times more likely to end up with a flat spare..............

Yup. Good points everyone. I've decided not to do it.
