Title: Fastest source for Suzuki parts?
Post by: pres589 on September 03, 2006, 07:47:50 AM
The dealership I've been working with on getting my GS into (better) shape isn't the quickest at sourcing parts from Suzuki; the line is that it takes about 3 days for anything from Suzuki to show up, while their aftermarket parts are there the next day.  What gives, and what should I do about this?  I need the formed hoses that come from the fuel tank drains down to the frame mounted petcock.  The drains are way too close together to use this plain-jane 5/16th's fuel hose I picked up, so I'm not sure what else to use besides the "real" stuff from Suzuki.  Is there somewhere I could order these hoses (or a nice thin-wall bulk hose) and have the parts here in just a couple days?

1.  This dealer had to order in pretty much all the parts I needed for the carbs on my GS, so I hold out little hope of them having these.

2.  Formed hoses aren't stored on rolls.

They aren't formed hoses. They are regular rubber hoses but they have a plastic shield around them which is added later and heated up to make it hard.

A few members of the board have replaced their hoses with ones from autozone and then bought plastic lining for them.

Good lord, if those aren't formed, I must be dealing with the orginal hoses and they've become pretty damned hard.  And cracked.  Etc.  In any case, it sounds like I've got some parts stores to troll around, it'd be fab if I was back on the damned bike by this evening.

Mine were definitely preformed.  No mesh around it or anything.

I replaced them with autozone hose.  They fit, if not perfectly.  Just put the hose on the short drain first, and then put the one on the reserve until it won't go anymore.  It works.

Man, I wish my dealership could get parts in three days.  I've been told it'll be 1-2 weeks for my throttle tube.   Bummer for me.

Search around for Tygon brand 1/4" fuel line.  It's thin-walled and fits easily on the GS hose nipples.  You can get it on e-bay but local small engine / lawnmower shops might have it on hand.

Dealers dont stock every part for every bike, they tend only to stock the popular and fast moving items. Anything the dont have they order from the central stores. Some small dealers will make a list and place the parts order with central stores once a week and get just one parts delivery a week, hence  your 3 day wait. They might place the order on a mon morning and get the delivery on a weds morn, so if you order on a thurs you are stuffed for 6 days. Others might do 2 orders a week and get 2 deliveries a week. It took me a while to work out why one local dealer would say, here on fri, and another would say here on tues for the same part at the same cost coming from the same place. At my local dealer there is a sign at the parts counter stating when parts will arrive.  "PARTS ORDERED ON SAT-MON-TUES HERE THURS. PARTS ORDERED WEDS-THURS-FRI HERE ON TUES". They do 2 orders a week. For quicker deliveries try the biggest dealer around or if you are desperate for the part offer to pay extra for next day carriage costs.

I got some clear 1/4th inch lawmower hose for everything but the line going from the petcock to the carb, that I used 5/16th... most 1/4th inch stuff I tried would barely start on whichever nipple I was trying to put the hose onto, and you could see the hose being stretched pretty badly outward to fit.  The lawnmower stuff did this too, to a point, but not as badly.  I've also got small motorcycle filters before the petcock, and a larger clear plastic filter after... already seeing a couple flecks of crud in that bottom one, I think I'll be changing filters on this thing at the end of the riding season.  The tank looked pretty good inside as well, so my fingers are crossed that I don't have a real rust situation just starting in the tank.

Hijack: is the choke control on the handlegrip supposed to be so stiff that the choke control itself wants to rotate around the grip to apply the choke? This is only applying choke, taking it off seems fine and isn't hard t all.  And it's not the return spring at the carb doing this, that spring isn't very stiff at all.

dirtbike shops have clear or colored fuel-grade vinyl hose by the foot.
