Title: new bike couple of questions
Post by: gmingst on September 03, 2006, 04:56:06 PM
HI I am new to the forum and just got an 06 GS500F.  I wasn't able to get the owners manual with the bike, and had a couple of questions.

What grade fuel do I need to run?

When do I need to use the choke?

Thanks
Graham

Welcome, congrats on the new bike!

Fuel, just run the cheap stuff. Do a search for "octane".. you'll find about a dozen threads discussing premium vs. regular gas. In the end, buying premium for the GS is just a waste of money.

As for the choke, that depends on your bike (which is lean from the factory, I'd recommend you rejet it) and the ambient temperature. Usually when I start my bike in the morning, I have to use the choke for about the first minute or less of riding, and then she idles right where she should. With a rejet, your warmup time will drop.

Now that you've got guidelines, try a search for both of those terms, you'll find a wealth of information from other members, not just idiots like me!

Enjoy the bike, and keep the shiny side up!

Thanks.  I will do some searching around.  I am still in break in < 250 miles.  It all is new to me, but I like the bike.  The engine has a more classic feel to it than some other bikes I have ridden.  I especially like the exhaust, what a great tone.
