Title: Cheap tires. Any good?
Post by: ducati_nolan on September 08, 2006, 03:53:33 PM
My tires are bald, and new tires are really expensive, and I'm really poor.  So I went looking for something a little less expensive than $130+ or so per tire and I found these
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&item=110002528245&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

They are Kenda cruser st K671 and they are like $132 for both the front and rear shipped, that's what I paid for my last rear tire. So I bought them. :dunno_white:

I realize that tires are very important, but dose anyone think that these would be unsafe? I realize it's a cruser tire, but most of my riding is on the highway, so long life is more important to me than extreme cornering ability. Plus with the bald stock bridgestone exedras I was able to grind parts of my bike in corners.

Anyone have any experience with Kenda tires? Other cheap tires? how well did they work and how long did they last?
Later,
The broke one

Don't ya think is a little late to ask for advice?  IMHO tires is one of the areas where you should not skimp on a motorcycle. I hope that at least they are the same size as the OEM's, if they are not, you may be risking some handling issues, especially if you are dragging pegs already.

Excellent tire, but dont expect to be railing around corners. Can you say "wears like iron, and grips like it too" I have it on all my cruisers ... but still corner hard enough to scrape stuff ... OK usually my feet ... but hey its cornering too ...
Cool.
Srinath.

For long life it's hard to beat the Dunlop K491 rear touring tires.  I used the K291 and then the K491 Dunlops on the rear of my 400-750cc Hondas for years and was quite happy with them; got 25-30k miles from them.  You can get a 130/90/17 rear for about $100 or so shipped.  Will outlast 3 cheap tires and saves 2 mount and balance charges doing so.

I had one on my first GS500 and got a non-repairable puncture at about 17-18k miles and it was only half worn then.  I really didn't like the K491 on the GS, it just doesn't want to corner as fast as the GS does.   :)  But I'd take one to a bald Excedra anyday.

I put a K671 Kenda on the rear of my old CM400A winter bike to run it one more winter and it's as good as the Excedras in my opinion, certainly better than a bald one.   Maybe as good as a BT45 in the dry, never felt like pushing it in the wet.  My 02 GS came with 4500 miles and a new K657 Kenda on the rear.  I bought it in Sept and put 5k miles on it till I put on the AV45/46 tires in the spring and it was about half worn.  Again as good as Excedras but not a sporting tire.  The 671 are a bit stickier and the harder 657 are a bit longer lasting.

Those shipping charges are too high on that E-bay Kenda, you can get a pair of OE size Kenda 671 for about $110 including shipping from Chaparral.  And it's hard to beat the Superstore prices on the Demons right now as Alpha mentioned.  Gave it a quick check and it said free shipping for Sept so looks like about $158 for a OE size pair right now if anyone is looking for Demons.

I've never tried the Cheng Shens that Shrinath loves.     Doubt if I ever will, I'd be more likely to buy the Kenda 671 if I wanted bargain priced tires or might try the Maxxis M6002 tires by Cheng Shen.

The Maxis Promaxx tires seem to be the cheapest tire for this bike that I have found ($40 for the front and $50 for the rear).  They looked like they had a little better tread, but its a little late since u already bought the tires.

After using BT39 tires I chose irc rx-01 for the replacement rear (http://www.irc-tire.com/mce/)
they are not as sticky as bridgestones  but still offer good grip for aggressive cornering  and they are made in japan a plus IMO

Don't forget the Duro HF918 @ $69 a pair and the Cheng Shin GBC Street Sharks @ $56 a pair; both in the 110/70 and 140/70 sizes.
