Title: my first oil change
Post by: wildbill on September 08, 2006, 05:20:38 PM
So i did my first oil change and it took me about 40min or so. I was happy to find an oil filter for the GS500 b.c there were non at any walmart or pepboy stores that i could find. So i goto the dealship and they say yeah GS500, we got the oil filter. So the guy gets it, costs $13 !?!?!?W@@$#, im like thinking, its suppose to cost around 7 or 8 bucks. Anyway i double check and see threads on the filter. I asked the salesman that if this was indeed for a GS500, year 95. He assures me it is and even remaks at how good suzuki is since alot of there parts are compatable, I get home and i see the filter i bought was the wrong one, glad i bought two so i wouldnt have to go back (NOT!). Im never buying shaZam! from them again, way overpriced and they dont even know what filter goes to what. Now i have to go back hopefully there open tomorrow. Other than that, the oil change is pretty easy but alot messier than a car.

So did you end up skipping the filter change?  That's rough dude, sorry you got screwed over.  We've all been there at one point or another.

Wow that sucks...

If you havent done this now already, next time look up the exact part number of the filter whether it be in the repair manual or online or whatever and take that with you so you know you don't get screwed over...

I've got a '94 and it uses slip on oil filters.
My Girlfriends 1980 GSX400 uses the same lower 1/2 of the engine as the GS500 and it uses identical filters.

I've never heard of a GS500 filter screwing on.

yeah i was 90% sure it was a slip on but he assured me it was right. Ha, anyway i just did the oil changee and cleaned up the filter, i guess ill just have to wait till the next oil change and use a new filter, next time im gonna order afew online though. $13 is rediculous for one filter for this bike, it cant be some high end filter. After all it is only a GS500.

Most auto parts stores won't stock the filters for our bikes, but they can order them and get them in usually the next day.

$13--wow, that's way too much. I live 20 min. from Chaparral, and they charge something like $4.95 for the OEM filter (no o-ring included, though). I've seen some discussions here and there on the web about how Wal-Mart's "supertech" line includes a filter for the GS that's around $2.99 and is comparable in quality to anything else out there.

The Purolator is supposed to be exceptionally high quality, but I found it almost impossible to find. I finally ordered one through Amazon, but it took six months (!!!) to arrive.

FWIW, and in case you can't find the parts numbers elsewhere on this site, here's the list I've compiled...
Purolator Oil Filter: ML16800
Hi-Flo 314-0133
WIX  24931
STP SMO 00
Fram CH6000

a clean GS500 oil change is all about practice. My first changes were really messy, and i got oil everywhere. Around the third time, i realized that if i went a bit slower and really thought about how i was going to do things, it was a much much much cleaner task.
