Title: Thank God for reserve...
Post by: icius on September 08, 2006, 07:24:37 PM
Just thought I would share a totally newbie thing to make everyone feel better about themselves...

Riding home tonight going along fine and enjoying myself.  I start to come up the hill toward my house.  GS stalls....

I get to the side of the road and try to start it again.  I starts for a few seconds and then sputter...

WTF????

I get it started finally and pull out.  Go and stop go and stop, sputter, sputter.  I'm really worried at this point that I did something to break it.  I stall out again and pull off the side of the road.  What am I gonna do?  Can't push it up the hill...

Then the big honkin neon newbie light bulb goes on.  I'm out of friggin gas!!!

HA HA HA HA HA.

I reach down, switch to reserve and berate myself all the way to the gas station.

On the way home there was nobody on the roads in my neighborhood so I practiced some emergency stops on the way back.  Stopping is impressive!  I was doing some really hard grabs from 40mph and the front wheel chattered a bit but stopped cold.  Is this what threshold braking feels like?

I did a small stoppie at one point.  Like maybe 6 inches off the ground.  It was more fun than I thought it would be....does that make me a bad person?  :o

Icius, any time you feel like you did something on your bike that was bad just think of my squidiliness.

I will be chastized for it, but I stand up, spread my arms all the way out and close my eyes sometimes. I've also done the little sit on the tank tricks (stoppie, wheelie. But not again, that's facking SCARY!)

Wheelies, yeah

Stoopies, check

Standing wheelies, once, was awesome. (Balance point baby!)

That's about as hard is it can stop my friend. The chattering is the absolute 9and lil past) the max braking.

Amazing isn't it!  The funny thing is that before last year there was no reserve, but He has altered reality as well to make us think that it has always been there.

Im not even a newb but my new bike catches me out every single bloody time. I now concentrate on checking the trip every so often and i know at about 120 miles i need to switch to reserve and then go to the pumps to prevent stalling and cutting out. This is because every single time after the first time it happens even though i know what it is it scares me. I just can't get my head round it. And now i thought i had it sussed checking the trip but today it conked off at 118 miles the bugger so yet again i was bloody panicing about what it was.

I loved my old bike for just having a reserve light. Sure it sometimes flickered when you went over a large bump or u were lent over quite abit when you had pretty low fuel in the tank but you get used to it and it means no conking out and switching the petrol to reserve. It still had an Off and On but no reserve just a switch which told you when you were running on reserve. Im considering installing a reserve light and then just leaving my petrol on reserve all the time so i know when im running on reserve because the light will come on but i wont have to conk out all the time.
