Title: New bike, new problems
Post by: Eric96500E on September 09, 2006, 04:48:12 PM
Hi I just recently bought a 96 gs500e, after trying to learn on my dads sportser, this is a hell of a lot easier to learn off of...It's been running find but lately it seems to start having problems.
All these problems happen on and off but they do happen enough to become a nuisance..
First, the bike revs real high while in neutral 4k-6k, even after warming up..
Second, sometimes when coasting up to a stop from 45mph+ the bike will stall and shut off..
Last time I went riding I was slowing down in 5th gear at around 50mph and went back on the throttle and it seemed to lost all its power, the engine was still running but there was no acceleration, so I downshifted and still nothing untill the bike clunked out at around 35mph..After pulling over it wouldn't start back up, I waited awhile and had to put it in prime to start it back up, and had to leave it in prime to keep it from stalling and chugging along..
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Carburetion too lean (too much air), check for an air leak around the carb boots.  Spray WD40 around the carb boots and listen if the engine rpm improves.  Check airfilter, too.

Either, idle not set right, or float levels set too low.  Idle should be set after 15minutes of running (minimum) to 1200-1300rpm.

Classic fuel starvation.  Search "fuel starvation" for threads about fixes.

I have a 2002 and to date have not noticed any quirks.
No vapor lock etc.  Pretty straight forward and reliable bike.
Just annoying minor oil leaks from time to time.
Runs like a top.  Althought after 23,000 miles I think I see a little oil
leaking from the right front fork.
